Morghann and the Skeeren (MORE-gan, SKI-ren)

'And then, with a mighty roar, the Skeeren fell into the sea, smashing the Mehrlek fleet into splinters. A huge wave covered the Skeeren and he was never seen again. Now he lives in the great Shadow off the sea cliffs and someday he will come back again and protect Mescar from any evil seeking to take this isle, our inheritance, from us.'
- a retelling of Morghann and the Skeeren for young children
One of the most popular legends in Mescar, the tale of Morghann and the Skeeren lives on through the years as being not exactly false but not entirely true either. The ending promise of the Skeeren's return in a day of great need has always and will always bolster the hopes of the mescrian people, even if no Skeeren is found at the bottom of the Shadow in the Mith Sea.

Morghann the Skeeren-Friend

Morghann, whose family name is long lost to time, has always been pointed to as being the 'founding father' of Mescar due to his significance in the sailing to, conquering of, and establishment of the kingdom's first city, Meerenah.   The first mescrians came from a desolate place north of the Northern Mountains where dry grassland and rocky mountains dominated the landscape. Life was hard for these primitive people as wolves from the Great Tribe preyed upon them constantly, making life even more unbearable than it already was.   His driving goal appearing in a dream many now claim was divine, Morghann rallied the few hundred living in the small village and set off in search of the new land set aside for them, a land he called Mescar.   After sailing their small fleet of rickety fishing boats across the Mith Sea, Morghann spied a great sea battle. Great volleys of flaming arrows flew at a great shadow of a beast standing on the shore, his height easily matching that of the massive mountains behind him. As Morghann and the mescrians grew closer, suddenly the young man's eyes shone bright blue and he stiffened, taking the wheel away from the captain and navigating straight towards the great beast, weaving though the unmistakably Mehrlek fleet. Despite the cries of all those on board, Morghann was guided by the Skeeren himself through the harbor and to the shore between the Skeeren's front two legs.   Cowering in fear, the mescrians waited, their boats beached on the shore beneath the white cliffs which would one day become an icon. Suddenly, the Skeeren rose up and plunged into the sea, obliterating the entire fleet. To this day, no one has seen the Skeeren.   Morghann was released from his trance and was celebrated as the chosen leader of the mescrians. Later, Morghann spoke to the first council of Mescar saying, "I do not know when, but he [the Skeeren] told me he would come back sometime. Sometime when Mescar is in greater danger than that which we just witnessed."

The Promice

Although not overtly a foretelling, the promise of the Skeeren's return from the depths is very much fantasized in Mescrian culture and many arts performances have included the great creature's coming to the delight of the audience.

Love the detail about the inclusion of myth in performances and other arts. That's something easy to overlook when devising myths, prophecies, etc.
