It was a common practice in the eastern lands to heal invalids sick with any kind of supposed 'incurable' or hard to heal from sicknesses by burying themselves in volcanic sand, a semi common occurrence along the coasts. This black sand is known to hold a high concentration of a mineral called Marem.
While the practice of burying oneself in the sand helped seep the super beneficial Marem into the body systems, it sadly was not enough to save many people and those who could have healed from multiple sand treatments lived far from the coast and did not have the means of traveling that far.
A New Way
It was not until recently the Healer's Council announced a new, faster, and better way to treat patients with Marem. This new process included pricking the patients skin then applying Marem directly to the blood pooling at the injury. Then, although painful, the wound was soaked in salt water which allowed it to heal quickly.
Marem is harvested from these sands and is able to be transported to places where others who before had no way to get to Marem could have Marem come to them. Although precious, enough Marem is able to be harvested to treat most patents in most areas.
