Firefall

It was dusk but the color in the smoke was still visible. Faierah pulled the hem of her cloak up to her mouth to try and filter the air, but it still smelled acrid.   Up ahead, Ahren walked confidently though the street, looking as if the smoke did not even bother him. A gaggle of unsupervised, filthy children darted around him, tossing small explosives, undoubtedly stolen, up and down the street.   She started as a small firecracker burst in front of her, shooting red and gold sparks in every direction. A spark found her sleeve and began to smolder, its thin waft of black smoke joining the haze. Faierah beat it out before sprinting forward to keep up with her companion.   This was why Ahren had chosen to come down to the big settlements. It was Firefall. No one would be able to find them amongst the chaos of the biggest, noisest celebration on Pentham. She glanced up towards the darkening sky and through the haze she glimpsed it. Firebringer. And this year it was red.
Hailed as the loudest, brightest, and most property damaging festival in the world, Firefall celebrated the annual return of Firebringer, a massive comet. This festival is most celebrated in the northern countries closest to the Northern Mountains since the comet passes closest to them. Each year, thousands upon thousands of explosives, firecrackers, and other bright flammable goods are sold and ignited, illuminating the night sky as brightly as the comet and producing with it, a choking haze.      Each year, Firebringer returns in a different hue. Alongside it's traditionally white tail, the body of the comet takes on a different color which many proclaim to be prophetic. Greens stand for longevity, bountiful harvests, and easy labor, blues are attributed to safe sailing, temperate weather, and springs clear of Kryka, and purples are for overall good fortune. Reds, however, foretell an ominous future, although none can say what darkness lies in the future.
