Stoney Hollow Settlement in Pathfinder 2e Project | World Anvil

Stoney Hollow

Stoney Hollow is a township and outpost in the Matanza Desert located on the Trades Road. Resting beneath a large hanging stone, Stoney Hollow benefits from its cool atmosphere, its closeness to a oasis, and its security as a trade post to thrive in the wild and unpredictable desert.

When the region now known as Stoney Hollow was first settled in 1782, it went by the name of Hammersmith Farms, named after the patriarch Augustus Hammersmith. For most of its early history, much of the land was still owned by the Hammersmith Family, and many of the townfolk's livelihoods still relied on them. By the turn of the century, the largely isolated region was facing a growing bandit problem which threatened the small region. During one of these raids, Augustus Hammersmith, while defending his home, was killed in 1812.   His death triggered fears throughout the town, with many of the workers threatening to leave the isolated farmstead. However, Amelia Hammersmith, daughter of Augustus, in the wake of the tragedy, sought to bring the community together. Utilizing her wealth, she converted an old barn into a large saloon. Furthermore, she invested money into the construction of stone walls and the opening of a stone quarry nearby.   Though these improvements seemed minor, it was enough to regain small merchant confidence in the region. By 1822, the small farm had attracted travelers to the region. Not only was its connection to freshwater through its wellspring and its hanging stone providing shade a welcomed break for merchants, but also the sense of safety and protection offered gave many travelers hope on the long treks between towns.   In 1827, the town held its first elections. While largely biased, the election went with few real problems and gave Amelia Hammersmith true political power over the town and its surrounding region. It was originally thought that these electors should have limited term, but the town's low population made it hard to maintain competitive elections. As such, it was decided that the term should be for life.

Stoney Hollow Township
Stoney Hollow finds itself nestled within the dried-up river bed, a remnant of a time when water flowed freely in this arid region. The village's buildings are constructed from weathered, sun-bleached wood and adobe, bearing the marks of their constant battle against the elements.
