Rot Wine

Utility

Rot wine is drunk by a patient in order to ease gastrointestinal issues. It is particularly effective in the treatment of gastroenteritus due to its antibacterial effects and high amounts of electrolytes, but it is also used to treat the symptoms of any disease causing mild to moderate diarrhea. Traditionally, the lake people use the wine to treat vargus fever.

Manufacturing

The process for creating rot wine begins at harvest. Rotberries are gathered in a central location and crushed to create a must. The juice is often quickly separated from the solid portion to reduce the toxicity, but occasionally, the juice is allowed to remain in contact with the skins to create a more potent variant known as grand-rot.   Yeast is added to the juice to start primary fermentation. The yeast is specialized for rot wine production, and it converts the glucose into ethanol and converts the majority of the toxins to a non-toxic form. After this primary fermentation, the skins are pressed to get the last of the juice, and in grand-rot, this juice is added to the wine to enhance its potency.   The wine is cooled in preparation for the secondary fermentation. The lake people usually place the sealed containers in lakes or rivers, but modern producers use mechanical means to chill the wine. The yeast and other fine particles settle out of solution, causing the originally cloudy wine to become clear.    Rot wine sold to the public is diluted and sweetened before being bottled for sale. Some producers will refrain from altering the final product and often label their products as vital rot wine. Grand-rot is also unaltered before bottling, but its sale is exclusive to medical officials and institutions.
Inventor(s)
The first mention of rot wine is from a travel journal dated to late 77 AP in which the writer describes the traditional treatment of vargus fever by the lake people of Nerthus. The lake people claim that a Witch was the first person to create rot wine, but there is little evidence that a Witch lived in the lake region at any time during the Age of Witches.
Access & Availability
Rot wine is widely available to the citizens of the Olvarish States, especially in the lake region of Nerthus, but it is less widely known in the kingdom of Falmoran. Diluted rot wine is often sold as a sports drink to the public. However the far more potent grand-rot is exclusively sold to medical establishments due to the potential for overdosing or poisoning.
Discovery
Rotberries, despite being toxic in even moderate doses, have long been known to alleviate diarrhea when eaten in very small doses (on the order of half of an average berry), and the fermented juice was often used as a preventative. This history dates back even before the Age of Gods as the plant is one of the few to survive the Change of Ages.
