Arlint

One of two major cities of humanity, Arlint sits pinched between the eastern slopes of the Human Cradle Mountains and shark filled Arlint Bay. Though smaller than its sister city Osolette, Arlint has a larger population and a more prosperous economy. Having less in land area is made up for in the height of the buildings that reach into the sky built one atop another until everything seems a hair's breath away from toppling.

Government

Arlint is a city-state run by a City Council, a group of thirteen members that meet in the Dimri Hall. The council body is run by the High Council, a life-long position elected by the other council members.

Defences

Arlint is surrounded on three sides by a 35 foot (10.6 meters) wall with towers, guard houses, and reinforced gates in three locations that only open on clear days. Flaming troughs run the length of the top of the wall and are kept lit everynight from sundown to sunrise; these not only allow archers quick access to a flame dip for their arrows, but, along with the 60 massive brazier that hang in equal spacing outside the wall, make the wall bright enough to be seen from miles around.

Infrastructure

Having grown from the shores of Arlint Bay out in a semi-circle, the city reached its maximum land area after the second expansion. To support the growing population the Artlinians were forced to build vertically, and in some areas connected the. higher tier buildings together with short bridges. The pedestals are a series of columns that stand along the Arlint Bay shore, and are leaned against the closest buildings, supporting them as the taller and taller structures begin to tilt toward to bay for support.

Districts

Due to Arlint's unique infrastructure districts are not only broken up by ground dividing lines, but by vertical levels as well; meaning, any district within Arlint will have Lower and Middle, or Lower Middle and Upper districts all of the same name. Because of this there are technically 30 districts in Arlint, eighteen to the west of the central promanade, and twelve to the east. Though in most cases, what matters comes dow to whether someone is from the more affluent east, or working class west. Furthermore, on either side, do you make enough to live in the newer city, or are you stuck behind the first wall in the old districts?

History

According to early histories and stories, Arlint was the first city founded by humans after the emergence from the Human Cradle Mountains.

Settlement

The first humans to follow Dimri Arlint came down the eastern side of the mountains and began the settlement in 377 as a scatter of buildings along the southern shore of what is now known as Arlint Bay. The nearby woods offered a plethora of building resources and soon the flimsy pre-history structures were replaced by more permanent, sturdy buildings. The following year saw Arlint's First Council and the official establishment of the city. By the year 380 the City Watch had been created and were keeping safe the growing population of the settlement.

Tvelty's Wall

As the city grew so did stories of people getting lost in the nearby Coldmist Forest. The stories of people being lost turned to stories of people being killed as mutalated bodies started being found more and more often. This news gave rise to the number of city watchmen and the early court system for bringing the killers to justice. Years passed before people connected the disappearances with the mists, with almost continuous logging taking place it was hard to dicern when each case happened. It was during the fourth celebration of the settlement's founding that the people of Arlint were shown thier true problem.   The next day the City Council, now headed by Gwenith Tvelty, and town architects planned a wall, with construction beginning less than a month later. When completed the wall wrapped around two-thirds of the city and provided a small buffer-zone between the town and the forest to the south. Originally thought of as a way to keep things out, the wall became a good way of keeping citizens in and night when the creatures seemed to be at thier most active.   Shortly after the wall was completed High Council Tvelty ordered an expansion be built onto the original Arlint Keep to house the growing number of bureaucratic offices needed to run the city. The High Council also commisioned the title of Lord Commander of the Arlint City Watch and granted the watch expanded powers to respond to the newly discovered threat in the nearby woods.

Expansion & Second Wall

It was years before the population reached the size that it was before the first major attack by the Coldmist creatures, but it did eventually, and overcame it just as fast. At first building were built vertically, adding more and mroe space as building stretched toward the sky. And soon, outside the wall were multiple square miles of now unforrested, and safe, land to build on. And build they did. Within twenty years of the original wall being built, and new wall was under cunstruction to protect the newly expanded city.

Hrodgier's Empire

In 622 Osolette, under the reign of Rowan Hrodgier and Deadra Fole, declared war on Arlint and attacked over the sparsly forested but dangerous Human Cradle Mountains. The hostilities ended with Arlint's surrender and the creation of Hrodgier's Empire who's seat of power would be centered in Arlint. Construction on a new Imperial Palace began immediatly and took four years to fully complete.   Soon after the completion of his new seat of power the emporer declared that the old City Council keep should be turned into a center for education. Rather than tear it down he wanted to preserve Gwenith Tvelty's efforts. The new school was named Lower Keep Academy and opened to students in 628.   The empire fell with the War of the Sunrise and Arlint was ravaged in the battle.

Arlint Rebuilt

After the damage done by the malgrove and volokatchen during the war Arlint found itself broken and without leadership. The quickly reestablished the Arlint City Council and voted in a new quorum led by (----------). The former emporer's palace was decared the council's new headquarters and renamed to Dimri Hall as well as naming (------) as a new Lord Commander and declaring the new headquarters for the Arlint City Watch as Eriken's Keep.

Geography

Arlint sits nessled at the center of three imposing geographic features. To the east sheer slopes lead to the jagged summits of the Human Cradle Mountains which run south as far as the eye can see. Nearby streams and rivlets provide what freshwater is needed that can't be pulled from wells, and the proximity of the mountains gives way to large mining operations.   Northwest of the city the nearly closed off Arlint Bay expands out from the continent in a two mile circle, the land curling around from the mountains like a falcon claw closing around its prey. The large bay provides fish and seals for Arlint's population and space for Arlint Port to the south and the three shipyards on the western shore. However, the abundance of space and fish also feed Arlint Bay's always present shark population.   To the south is the Coldmist Forest which very few humans are able to pass through alive. And those that do almost never make a return trip.
