Bregenz Agricultural-Habitat

"It's been nearly twenty years since Bregenz was lost, but it's still a very sore subject for the colonies, especially Vaduz. You've seen the combat footage, the multilingual cries of vengeance for Bregenz bellowed from infantry or painted on hull-plates, an 'inarguable' justification for every single brutality inflicted onto the FUC's armed forces. And for the most part, the people of the FUC do not dispute the scale or severity of what was committed. Seems nobody came out better for it."
— Rosalina Toro - Reflections of Parime, Revised Edition.

"Back on Kiev, I used to be a Cyberpsych - that's a therapist specialising in problems relating to cybernetics, to you earthworms. From the day I got my qualifications I've been tending to folk who struggled in acclimating to having polymers and cables where there used to be fless and veins, dealing with a steady flow of dysmorphias, dysphorias and intetrigity-disorders. It never got to me, even when things got tough. No matter how much my heart hurt for a patient's struggles, I always woke up the next morning eager to help again, and it had been that way for fourty-two years. Bregenz was my fourty-third.   The station didn't have much in the way of survivors, mostly people who were far away from the middle of the shelter. Cancer was rampant, almost every survivor had it, which necessitated drastic cybernetics just to save what was left of them. There were... some children, many of which only had the essential Vulcanoid implants, who were coming to terms not only with the death of their families, but with waking up in an entirely new body. [...] I suppose it had finally got to me. I retired shortly afterwards, but I kept in contact with the kids.   Maybe the FUC didn't know that Bregenz was as much a settlement as a food-production facility, that it was a place people lived. Or maybe they just didn't care. They've sown the seeds of death either way, and we'll be the ones harvesting."

Infrastructure

Bregenz used to be one of the primary non-imported sources of food for Vaduz, consisting of countless cubic meters of high-density hydroponic farms, algaculture facilities and even in-vitro protein manufacturing facilities, staffed by a mixture of human and robotic caretakers.

History

Bregenz was the very first production-model 'Sawah-class' modular space-station, designed to easily accomodate the expansion of its body by way of attaching further modules and rings to its core as increased demand requires. It was commissioned in 4759u by Dr. Mumtaz bin Deeb, both as a means of proving the design's capability and flexibility, and to better meet the growing food-demands of Vaduz without the necessity of expensive importations from Falias. The station's construction was finished in 4762u, and within weeks of its initial testing-arrays (popularised by giveaways of first-batches of food to various influencial figures and competition-winners), began producing high-density/lowfootprint footstuffs that would feed countless stations and set the standard for both modular space-habitats and food-producing infrastructure in the Lanes.   In 4998u, the station was the target of a clandestine operation headed by Colonel Milton Pineda of the Falias Colonial Army (of whom General Carras insists that Pineda devised and initiated the plan without authorisation), who allegedly sought to retaliate for Vaduz's prior destruction of an FUC comms-satellite by disrupting one of their primary food-sources in order to make them more dependant on importing food from Falias, by smuggling a high-yield gamma emitter into the station on a disguised/spoofed shuttle, and targetting the food-sources with low doses of ionizing radiation, initially weak enough to allow safe evacuation-time of crewmembers aboard the station.   However, the plan was discovered before it could fully come to fruition, and in the commotion the gamma emitter was deployed without initiation of proper safety-governers, leading to the device unleashing its full power on the station: Within seconds the entire back half of the station's docking-bay was lethally irradiated, and soon the rest of the station joined it as the sabotage team attempted to flee. 7,182 of the 8,000-strong crew were killed either from direct exposure to high levels of gamma-radiation or the resulting effects, while most survivors suffered lifelong ailments. the sabeteurs' ship was succesfully intercepted before it could escape to Falis airspace, but all hands on board that were not killed by the gamma-emitter had committed suicide by various means before capture was possible (The fate of Colonel Pineda remains unknown, as he was not part of the team of saboteurs and the FUC alleges his whereabouts hasn't been known since the day before the operation was initiated).   Currently, Bregenz remains in its current orbit as Vaduz workers begin the long task of recovering salvagable systems and launching the unsafe remnants into deep-space.
