War between Khalimed and the Kalashtar

Military action

976 AK - 983 AK

As everyone expected, the war between the kalashtar and Khalimed started. Seven years after the war declaration, Khalimed won once again and wiped out most of the enemy race, destroying their community and forcing them to exile and hide among other human races, with which the kalashtar share much similarity.

Thanks to the preparation undertaken by the Kalashtar and the somewhat recluse location of their settlements, as well as the military effort that the empire was still undertaking in the west against the Nomadic Tribes of the South, the war actually lasted longer than the world expected. Scholars divide the war in two distinct phases:

  • The first phase, which lasted from 976 to 980 AK, saw the defending Kalashtar resisting against the invasion of the human armies, with a combination of guerrilla tactics and strategical retreats. Not used to temperatures colder than their homeland, Khalimedi soldiers underperformed the expectations, and after the first two years of conflict even desertion started afflicting the human's armies.
Contemporary historians paint this initial years as a looming defeat for Khalimed, and even sources close to the eastern kingdom government mention the possibility of a white peace. Scholars both at the time and in later years attribute this initial success to the weather conditions, the readiness of the Kalashtar opposed to the almost frenzied religious fervor of the humans, and especially to the divination ability of the defenders, which were apparently able to predict with reasonable advance where Khalimed would have hit, and acted accordingly.
  • The second phase, spanning the last three years of the conflict, is marked by a sudden and progressive loss by the kalashtar. Historians and scholars both of the time and of more recent time struggle in finding an actual reason. The most accepted explaination lies in the capture of elements of the Kalashtar divination mages, which would have deprived the defenders of the information on where the humans were about to attack. Other sources point at possible traitors or spies among the Kalashtar, sent by Khalimed to inflitrate their communities.
Whatever the reason, Khalimedi armies started succeeding in their attacks, and they eventually won the war in 983 AK.
