Chameleon

Appearance   Chameleon are Terrans spliced to gain a natural ability to camouflage. They resemble large bipedal lizards, with vertical pupils, scaly hides, and in many cases, tails.   Physicality   Chameleon are known for being fast, smart, and stealthy. They can camouflage at will. Despite their reptilian appearance, they are warm blooded and all their internal systems match those of a core Terran. Two small side-effects from the splice have not yet been worked out: First, they have relatively short life spans (30-50 years), though that may simply be due to their propensity for dangerous work. Secondly, for the first five years or so of a Chameleon’s existence - born or spliced - even subtle emotional change can trigger chromatic change, controlled or subdued only by intense concentration.   Culture   Terrans initially chose to become Chameleon to protect their colonies on Wayfair from large mutated predators called Threshers. As the splice proved more and more successful, its potential became clear off-world as well. Chameleon now integrate with cultures on many planets and it is extremely common to see blended Chameleon relationships and families.   On Wayfair, a planet known for sudden violence, Chameleon tend to be more patient than their Terran counterparts, logicians and tacticians more than brute warriors. Still, rare is the Chameleon without a story of battle, so when a Chameleon mingles with Terrans socially, they often find themselves holding court. Fortunately, their wit and sense of timing make most of them expert storytellers. In fact, in their own families, Chameleon pass knowledge down orally more often than through technology or formal education.   Systems & Corps   The Chameleon splice was patented by Rendall Technologies. Primarily the Wayfairi who undergo the splice do so to protect their colonies. Off-planet, Chameleon are generally freelance as opposed to being citizens of a specific corporation. As such, they are often paid quite well. Most of them tend to view the corps, and Terran Systems in particular, in a positive light. To date, although it is a sought-after trait in job postings, no corporation has required the use of the Chameleon splice.
