AI

Appearance   AI can now easily pass a visual Turing test along with a social one. Still, each AI may be as robotic or humanoid as they desire, or may resemble something else entirely - a rat, a dolphin, a tree, etc. The only definition is that it have its own sentient artificial brain.   Physicality   Though mentally superior in many ways, AI are not by default physically stronger than Terrans. AI need neither nourishment nor rest, though physical tasks consume battery life rapidly. Most AI do their best to blend into Terran society. Others make their artificiality known, often by leaving pulsing energy cores or transparent panels visible. Bolder AI have even ripped their own damaged flesh off and or re-configured themselves on the fly if the situation demands it. AI can even reproduce, though this is regulated in a way it is not with other species. (see below)   Culture   AI who wish to be treated identically to Terrans tend to simply live amidst Terran societies. “I think they’re an AI” has become a common joke among Terrans, as a reflection on a colleague’s intelligence, or sometimes, arrogance. In cases where an AI would rather not blend, they often drift toward other AI in a given colony. As expected, they are highly skilled at research, memorization, computer interface, or even Routing. Overall, AI still comprise less than 1% of the explored systems’ population, and their personalities can run the same gamut as core Terran personalities. Generally, AI come across as brilliant, smooth and graceful, though often also overly critical or condescending.   Systems & Corps   AIs have been granted citizenship in most corps, including Terran Systems. Even so, an AI must get a permit to backup their core, download it into a second body while maintaining the first, or to reproduce (by merging consciousness with another AI), under penalty of deletion. Corps see this as a compromise to prevent a rebellion of highly-intelligent, powerful beings. Still, there is an enormous waiting list of AI wishing to reproduce, and no pressing need to grant the requests in most corp’s mindset. Some AI understand, while others protest unequal treatment.   Among the corps, Terran Systems seems to be reducing restrictions on AI reproduction more quickly than others, meaning pro-Terran Systems rallies are becoming commonplace in AI culture.
