Taken Fiends

That was not an animal from our world. Even mana mutation can't make something like this!

Mileo, Armris: "Taken Fiends", in: Velia Tessana (Ed.): Velia's Guide to the Normal, Abnormal and Abominable. Encyclopedia of the Species. Orothian Temple Publishing. Orothian, 891 Edean Age, pp. 3217-3224.   "Taken Fiends, also known as "Children of the Rapture", were a species of animal found among the ruins of the Kingdom of Theia. Their origins lie outside the Mortal Plain, in a place that has not yet received an official name by the Hierarchy but is generally referred to as "The Wake" by mages. The first Taken Fiends were discovered in 345 EA, approximately 24 years after the Rapture occurred."   "Unlike normal Taken, which are composed of either former humans or animals swallowed up in the Rapture, Fiends appear to be wholly from the Wake. Their forms do not match any animal in the records and their abilities do not conform with the known laws of the Arcana, making Mana Mutation as their origin improbable. The name "Fiend" was applied as a general term as it fit the creature's behaviour and vague appearance."   "Fiends generally share the same features of other Taken. Their form can be made out thanks to the shimmering outline and their body is similarly filled with that silver essence which emanates from their cores. However, unlike other Taken they are fully see-through. They are universally quadrapedal creatures, standing about five to seven metres tall. A tail, about one meter thick and nearly twenty long, extends behind them."   "They seem to posses a maw which they can extend over nearly two meters lenght and can be used either to devour a human whole or to spew fourth silvery acidic mist. About as fast as a horse they are also able to phase through objects in a short span of time, a span which has been determined to last no longer than five seconds. Wherever they posses eyes or ears could not be determined."   "Taken Fiends are counted as extinct on the Mortal Plain since 747 of the Edean Age. With the Rapture closed off, they did not seem to be able to keep themselves materialized within our world."

A hundred thousand for a normal Taken. Ten million for a Fiend. Can you see why we should be hunting those buggers instead?

Cores
"Fiends posesses a core similar to the other Taken. But their variant appears to be much stronger than the others, making it an especially valuable commodity. However, unlike the cores of lesser Taken, Fiend Cores are only used to grant their users power on par with a high level mage."   "While normal cores will simply turn the user Taken over a period of a year, Fiend Cores will do something more complex. Their users will turn into something else, as seen with Lucia Rev- The following section has been redacted on the Order of the Arcane Hierarchy.
