Mebresh

Mebresh is located on the northwestern continent, and takes up most of the northern portion of the landmass. Most of the country is covered in ancient taiga forest, with a flat tundra to the north, and more temperate forests and grasslands to the south. Running along the western border are the mountains and hillands and along it's eastern border with Cratria are the cold marshes.   It has always been a wild place, even during the days of the old empire it was never considered to be truly tamed. During the demon invasions, the second portal was opened at the foot of the mountains and most folk fled or were killed, as the demon hordes poured out. After the demon invasions, most of the folks who had remained hidden in the north fled south to the cities and towns which were rebuilding and offering safety.   Not all who fought with the demon armies were demons, many were peoples from other planes who had been forced into servitude by the demons. With the destruction of the demon armies, some of these people took the chance to desert and fled into the northern wilderness, to escape their demon masters. These were the beast kin and shifters, and the primal forests of Mebresh were close enough to their original homes that they were well suited to survive in this harsh land.   After a while people once more moved back up north, and set up small kingdoms and countires which rose and fell over the years. Some attempted to move north into the forests to expand their lands, but each gave up when their forces simply vanished into the forest never to be seen again. Over time all attempts ceased, until the rise of the Kalumnian Empire, when once more the wild lands of the north were threatened.   As the Imperial armies conquered the south of the continent, more and more people fled north to escape, especially those who were of extra planar descent, which by now was a significant portion of the population. Some were even brave or desperate enough to flee into the forests, regardless of the tales which surround the dangerous wild lands. What some of them were to discover was that the wild lands weren't as wild as most people thought, though they were most definitely as dangerous.   The shifters and beast folk had achieved a delicate balance of power, forming clans which ruled certain territories within the forests. There were even a few settlements of hardy humans and dwarves, which had managed to carve out an existence for themselves. The Imperial expansion had, up until this point, not affected them and they had stayed out of any fighting. However it soon became obvious that more and people were fleeing north, and not all of them were simple refugees.   The clans knew they would have to do something to halt the northward spread of the Imperial forces, as it was becoming more and more obvious that they had every intention of attempting to conquer the world. Joining forces with the settlements along the southern borders, under the command of a bull like beast kin, they succeeded in halting the Imperial army's northward push. By this point the Empire had begun to stretch itself too thin, fighting on too many fronts at once. They lost countless forces to the deep dark forests of the north, and by the time the Empire was overthrown by armies from elsewhere, their northern forces had been decimated.   Today the land of Mebresh is a loose confederation of clan terrritories, and mostly Dwarven and Human city states. After the Imperial war they formed a treaty and marked out the borders of what they considered to be their land. Over the next several hundred years, they made sure everyone else knew where those borders were too. They have never tried to increase those borders, but they hold them from all who try to encroach on their land. None have tried for many years.
