Ojil the Bamboo-crafter

Infusions: bamboo   A utopian visionary, mage, and acrobatic warrior, Ojil is many things at once. A man seized by a passion to reform his homeland of the Barren Isles into a better, fairer society.   Ojil is trying to build momentum behind his ideas, and this involves intervening actively with existing governments where he sees fit, as well as trying to garner goodwill for his cause by doing good deeds (though he genuinely also wants to help).   he supports himself by taking jobs in construction, architecture, or adventure-adjacent rolls, but is never flush with money. family supports him too.   Personality: Flamboyant, brash, inflexible, fast-acting (contrasted against staid yet pliable culture of the islands). follows the Order Principle.   questions:
  • does he wear the ancestral \^/ notch of the Boola stand?
  • Possible other nicknames: standless, walking stand, new stand?

Physical Description

Body Features

has the typical banded/ringed green skin of a Bamboo Dowo, but is tall and lithe even by his people's standards.

Special abilities

Powers:
  • Able to cause bamboo shoots to grow at incredible speed.
  • Build houses in a few seconds. however, if this bamboo is cut down (or not tended to properly?) it will quickly die and become weak and useless.
  • furthermore, Ojil can't dismiss or destroy the bamboo by magic - he creates his own impediments - a weakness, as well as being symbolic.
  • Impale or trap foes with bamboo "spears"
  • Fling himself around by creating bamboo poles under his feet.
  Skills:
  • Extremely nimble and acrobatic (supplemented by powers)
  • Expert in architecture, design, structure and engineering
  • Uses a machete/kukri-like shortsword if pressed, and is fairly competent with it.

Apparel & Accessories

  • carries an ancient magic Mattihan dagger, which was once used to control the Beast of Thirsting Iron. all that remains of the beast is a few fragments, which Ojil keeps in a bamboo vessel. they still attempt to reach their target, which means the dagger can be used to track people by absorbing a bit of their blood; the fragments will then act as a crude direction indicator towards the target.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

  • Born after the greening of the Barren Isles, to a large extended family of Bamboo Dowo cultivators and builders.
  • developed his fast-growing bamboo knack - a sign of his restless nature - and developed ideas for ways to organise communities that were not well received by his community.
  • in 82LF, attempts to speak to the leader of the Putative Brotherhood (to test his Order Principle ideas in fierce debate), who is held in The Awl. Defeats the Beast of Thirsting Iron and acquires his ancient Mattihan dagger. possibly forms enough connections to use the Brethren as an information network over the following decades.
  • his previous attempt at such a planned community (79-63LF) did not work out.
  • Befriended the 3 brothers from the labyrinth, Anvakai, golgomai, and Varadvai, who also have bold ideas.
  • relationship with The Lenser.
  • at some future point, successfully sets up communities - possibly connected to The Braided Band?

Morality & Philosophy

Outline of his utopian ideals/community-forming projects:
  • planned geometric structures for towns, which - once completed and filled - will not be allowed to expand. instead, further growth will be achieved by the creation of new communities nearby.
  • collective ownership of land, which will grow only the most efficient crops for each region (types and ratios determined by popular votes).
  • Direct democracy, with weekly votes held on each issue, followed by debates and the raising of issues for next week.
  • 1 vote available to any citizen who can pass a simple knowledge test
  • yearly appointment of a Consul, whose job it is to oversee the elected proposals and make sure they are carried out. cannot serve consecutive terms, but also cannot be removed early.
  • war to be forbidden between communities, and trade to only take place - no agreed mechanism to enforce this.
However, he is frequently updating his ideas, to the point of detriment and instability.
