Servant revolt
General Summary
Concerned over the board post, Richter called for allies in the help of investigating this "Crimson Noble" who claimed to have his servants leave him, wanting someone to help in the return of his people. Eli, Garth, Vareth and Shiny-scale all answered, meeting in The Frozen Horn Inn, in Draconia. After a small discussion on height, and what Richter's intentions are for the mission, the group headed to the meeting spot in the plains north of Willowdale, coming from the Fjordhaven portal.
Crossing into Sovereignty territory, guards approached, demanding papers from each of the members in the party. Richter was able to produce his paperwork, but all but Shiny-scale had to purchase their rites. They were reminded how long they were good for, and Garth, attempting to lie about his status, was charged extra for his papers, to "overlook his offense to the kingdom". Shiny-scale, finding a nearby tree, glided past the river and the guard into the necromantic kingdom, bypassing the need for paperwork.
The party came into a large camp, surrounded by caravans. Upon calling out, a few dwarven workers responded, retrieving their master. Standing on one of the caravans stood a human figure, dressed in elegant red attire, who introduced himself as Lord Oros, the Crimson Noble. After proper introductions were made, he explained why he made a call out to adventurers. His servants, unhappy with their tasks, abandoned him. These servants had a large debt, so Oros was eager to have them returned to his employ. He asked they do so as humanely as possible, but if they were to attack the party and a few were slain during acts of self defense, he would not hold it against the party. Oros mentioned he had a greater bounty for the party, should they retrieve the leader of the servants, as he was very special to him. Richter made some non-committal statements about their assistance, while Garth and Eli agreed to help. Vareth remained silent, and Shiny-scale told him they just need a stick to whack the sense into them; after all, that's what you do for kobold young. Oros gave the location he knew they had last run off to, and asked that they be swift in their travels, he had some new servants with the dwarves he had obtained and was eager to get home.
Traveling back to Fjordhaven, the party chartered a ship to The Lost Colonies, from captain Sten Earthstrike, who informed them of the dangers of the island, and the fate of the last party he had taken to the isle. He informed them he would wait for a few days, however, he did not plan to wait for more than five, in the event that they had fallen. Accepting the deal, and after a few days of travel, the party landed on the island, finding a cave entrance, with a sign that read, "Sleeping room - stay out".
Richter stated he wanted to talk with the individuals, so to attempt diplomacy. Richter approached the door, knocking, but the individuals inside refused to open. Which Richter said they were not there to kill them, the seemed to doubt it, and instructed the intruders to leave. Vareth stood in silent contemplation, while Garth wanted to do the job properly. Shiny-scale, in an effort to help, used his fire breath to start burning down the locked door, and as it burned, Richter assisted by chopping the flaming debris down. Now, able to see inside, the party was able to see the servants were kobolds, terrified of their intruders. Demanding that they come out, they doubled down, now even more fearful. Shiny-scale attempted to use fire diplomacy, only to end up killing two of the kobolds. This caused the rest of them to take up arms, and a fight proper broke out. Attempts to subdue the kobolds were met with mixed results. Richter's swing was so powerful, the frail bodies were unable to stand against it. Eli took his efforts of self defense lethally, while Vareth used blunt arrows to attempt to subdue the kobolds, and Garth was the most effective at it, using the magic of color spray to knock the kobolds unconscious.
After the fight had concluded, it was obvious more died in the struggle than had survived. Richter condemned the rest of the party (Vareth excluded) from their lethal means of attack, when he was certain he could have talked them down. While Richter was not innocent in killing of kobolds, he was particularly upset with Eli, who seemed to have no issues with the taking of life. Eli said he was simply saving them, letting them move on to the afterlife and would no longer have to live in fear. Though his words were honeyed, they had no sway over Richter. While he continued to lecture the party, Shiny-scale started on the next doorway, burning it, and the sign indicating what the room is, to ash.
Garth decided to check it out ahead of the party, as his dark vision and small stature would allow him to scout ahead rather well. As he entered the second room, the floor dropped underneath him. He was able to jump back, narrowly avoiding falling on the spikes. He warned the rest of the party about the trap, and continued on, not noticing the second trap. Vareth moved ahead after avoiding the first pit but was not as fortunate on the second one that was not noticed, as he fell in, the sharp spikes digging into his body. The party attempted to enter the room and assist Vareth in getting out of the pit. Vareth was able to get out of the pit, and the party was getting ready to move forward, Eli struggled to get over the first pit, and as he attempted to jump also fell in, the spikes hitting a critical point in his back. He was able to climb out, but not before contracting a disease from the spikes.
Trying to be more careful, they party continued on, the next room labeled, "treasure room - no take!". Upon entering, the center of the room sat a large chest, with gold scattered around it. The party, suspicious, convinced Garth to be the one to open it. Garth took the opportunity to cast a few detection spells, but seeing no obvious danger, he opened the chest. Inside was a scroll, and upon opening it, the scroll read; "haha! We got you stoopid!" as a cage dropped down around Garth. Murder holes in the walls opened, as kobolds archers began to shoot into the cage. The party sprung into action, Vareth keeping his distance and shooting into the opening, Eli, sticking his hammer into them to squish the kobolds, Shiny-scale burned the kobolds alive. This time, the party gave up on non-lethal means, and killed everyone they came across, while Richter freed Garth from his imprisonment. After their slaughter of the soldiers in the walls, they healed up, and read the sign for the next door, "leader's room, best stay out."
Garth once again took the lead, just to get a blast of flames in his face, as a larger kobold with wings was on the other side of the door, alerted to their presence by the fight in the last room. The party quickly descended on him, and after just a few moments in combat, he surrendered.
Richter, took lead on questioning him, threatening to kill the kobold unless he obeyed him. Speaking to the kobold, he revealed his name as Fonufe, and he was the leader of these people. They were used by Oros, who he revealed was actually a ancient red dragon in disguise, in clan wars against other dragons. Fonufe stated he wished to leave Oros's service, but the fact they found him here means there was nowhere safe for them to hide. After his threats of murder, Richter attempted to play the role of diplomat, and convince the kobolds to go to Draconia, where it would be a safe haven. Fonufe stated he refused, to leave would be to sentence everyone to death, as Oros is not the forgiving type, or the forgetting one. If Oros was able to find them here, in a place there was no other place they could go that would be safe. Fed up with Fonufe, Richter tied his mouth shut, and with the help of Eli, searched the room for anything remaining. They found hidden under the bed a hatch, containing the women and children of the clan, hidden away to keep them safe from the murderous intruders. Vareth stood in silence, as Garth was overjoyed at the idea that bringing more of the kobolds to Oros could result in more money for the party. Unrelenting, Richter allowed Fonufe to talk, who he again attempted to convince to come to Draconia. Seeing the determination from his people's killer, and the man who threatened to end his life, Fonufe relented, stating any soldiers who were still alive, he would take to Oros, hoping it would be enough to satisfy the dragon's rage, and gave Richter permission to take the women and children to Draconia.
Fonufe and the rest of the kobolds accompanied the party, with the women and children being dropped off in Draconia, and the others dropped Oros. Oros thanks the party, and is saddened by the loss of life, as there were so few that ended back up in their employ. He asked if that was all, and the party did their best at lying, stating yes. Oros gave the party the gold promised, and said he may seek them out for additional work in the future. The party quickly left the area, and split in Fjordhaven, ready for the next adventure, with one exception.
Doubling back, Eli had one last conversation with Oros, giving the truth of what happened, asking for mercy for his party and the remaining kobolds. Oros thanked him for his truthfulness, and will consider his request. What Oros plans to do next, no one is completely certain...
