Amaranth Horses

Though few in number in Amaranth, there are a handful of horse breeds that still maintain a steady population. Due to their requirements for grazing land and running space, as well as their poor performance in the looser soils of The Battlefield, horses are not usually bred for battle.

Dwarf Horses

Despite it's name, there's nothing diminutive about the Dwarf Horse. An extremely heavy-set draft horse, their breed originated when the Dwarves were first settling outside the city - hence their name. They're still used extensively to haul goods into the city and perform the heavy lifting around the mineshafts (with the aid of pulleys and capstans). Few Dwarf Horses ever see battle; their temperament isn't suited for it, and despite their massive size, they have difficulty attacking anyone in front of them. Nonetheless @Destra is often depicted wielding her two-handed hammer from atop one, despite outcries of historical accuracy and actual practicality.

Luna's Runner

Bred for speed, as their name might suggest, these pale horses are typically used by couriers and by junior officers relaying battlefield orders. The House of Alacrity, which produces their line, weaves enchantments into them as they grow up, providing them with a partial levitation effect, allowing them to easily traverse the soft sands that other horses would sink into. Some have even been trained to gallop over water, though the horses are quite reluctant to begin such training. The enchantment also gives them a soft pale glow that led to them being named Luna's Runners. Despite being extremely expensive to raise, they are still perceived as worth that cost, but not worth risking at the front line of a battle. Imitation breeds are generally just called 'Runners', and mostly see use by outriders performing rites of Hircus outside the city walls. Because running away is one way of respecting the danger of the wilds.

Fey Horses

Whether these creatures are actually horses at all is still up for debate, but they only appear around The Spiral and generally stick close to the Centaur herds. Some attempts to coax them into being saddled have succeeded, and they are reportedly extremely intelligent (if somewhat fickle) mounts. Possessing fey magic of their own, they are the only horse breed that military commanders actually want to have on the front lines, and those few that can form a bond with such creatures usually find themselves quickly in charge of cavalry units.
