The Order of Ashes

While the fraelings rampaged and conquered, the order was scheming. While Vishik slaughtered and terrorized, the order was working. While hope was dying, the order was fighting.
The Order of Ashes was an unofficial and decentralized organization built around finding a way to stop the fraelings. One branch spent centuries studying magic to travel between planes and crafting alliances and treaties with anyone who would help. another branch spent centuries protecting the identity of the Phoenix King, the leader of the resistance whom they empowered with the power of a Phoenix. Another branch studied the diseases and anatomy of fraelings in order to find a way to destroy them. Each sect of the order handled things in there own way, but one central aspect was key - secrecy.
The discovery of the orders' existence is part of its collapse. Several sects were discovered at various points in history, leading to their disbanding or, in one case, destruction. It is unknown if any sects still operate, and if so where or for what purpose.
