Rougarou
Rougarous are wolf-headed humanoids who can transform into wolves. While this sometimes confuses others into mistaking a rougarou for a werewolf, these humanoids are not lycanthropes. In fact, most detest werewolves and hunt them mercilessly.
The race isn’t numerous or widespread, and rougarous tend to live in secluded communities. They are very protective of their families and friends, and the communities they form tend to be strict and lawful. In their homeland, rougarous are most plentiful in southern swamps and marshes, where it is believed they originated, but have since spread throughout the rest of the world.
Basic Information
Anatomy
A rougarou is a muscular, wolf-headed humanoid covered in brown and gray fur. Rougarous tend to be slightly taller and heavier than typical humans.
Growth Rate & Stages
Rougarous age similarily to that of humans, and are often considered adults around the age of 14.
Ecology and Habitats
It is well known that Rougarous feel most at home within marshes, swamps and bogs, but are capable of living in most habitats due to their adaptability and hardiness. This had led to them expanding from their home Continent of Ergarous to most areas of Southern Pallet.
Even today, where housing, towns and cities are available, some Rougarous still prefer living within the wilds in tribes and clans like in the years past.
Biological Cycle
Rougarous appear to have some sort of connection to the weather around them. During hotter seasons they tend to begin shedding their fur, while they grow it out during the colder seasons.
Despite this change however, their fur does offer much protection against the environment, and appears to be more for comfort than anything.
Behaviour
While most of rougarou society is upstanding and trustworthy, as with any group there are some violent and aggressive members. These evil, loner rougarous occasionally form into packs that raid the countryside and prey upon the just and kind. Thankfully, rougarous are generally civilized and loyal, and most are quick to hunt down and punish their feral kin for their foul deeds.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Similar to that of a regular wolf, Rougarous tend to have a sensitive capability of scent, as well as better hearing then most other race.
Civilization and Culture
Beauty Ideals
Due to the constant growing out and shedding of their fur, Rougarou tend to wear loose fitting or easily adjustable clothing. Males tend to enjoy thin clothing that allow them to feel air, often accented with some sort of metal decoration or adornment while females enjoy flowing clothing, wearing some sort of jewelry.
The piece of jewelry is often a family heirloom, transferred from daughter to daughter. Rather than the quality and material of the jewelry, the age is often the true value between Rougarou, an older heirloom means more caring the family as a whole is committed and loyal to each other.
Those that lose such piece of jewelry are often shunned by the entire family, and possibly even the town or clan.
Courtship Ideals
Courtships of Rougarou are very similar to that of other races, most similar to that of humans. Flirting, gifts of food, clothing or jewelry, and dates are common.
The first date is often a task of some sort. Hunts, a craft of some sort, such as making a canoe, or an outdoor activity like rock climbing are common, as the pair determines if their problem solving skills will match. If the two determine thru this task that they are compatible, then regular courting takes place.
When a pair wishes to tie the knot, it is often acknowledged with both of them taking on a grander task, such as construction of a home, a great hunt, or traveling to an exotic land. Should the pair succeed, or even if they fail on occasions, they begin making plans for the marriage ceremony.
Marriage is a sacred thing for Rougarou, and one can only be married once without being shunned by others of their kind. As such, all Rougarou marriages, even marriages to those of other races, must be recognized and acknowledged by the Ceremony Spell, officiated by a Cleric.
If the Ceremony Spell fails, the pair are often exiled from the Clan or Town, shunned by everyone.
