An Interview with Richard Dargent

Are you a morning person, or more of a night owl?
I am less happy to be awake in the morning, but it isn’t worth wasting time on complaints.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person when you meet them?
Are they wealthy enough to be a problem?
You see a huge spider in your room, what do you do?
Destroy the spider and fire the maids.
If you could go back and change one decision you made in the past, what would you change?
Forbid my worthless spare to speak to boys his age from the start.
Tell me about your first kiss.
Who remembers.
Do you give people second chances?
I can always afford replacements.
Are you a cat person or a dog person?
No.
Do you think you’re attractive?
I’m rich. Wealth attracts.
What’s your worst habit?
My wife says I can be brash.
When was the last time you cried?
1278, Copperday Tinkermoon, after my father broke my arm.
Are you a good liar?
It’s my job.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Disobedience.
Have you ever had your heart broken?
No. I’m not a fool.
Are you more likely to use your fists or your words in an argument?
Depends with whom.
What’s something you’re naturally good at?
Numbers, fortunately.
What’s something you had to work hard to be good at?
Working with people.
Can you tell when someone is flirting with you?
I have better things to care about.
Do you think money can buy happiness?
It’s the only thing that can buy anything.
Do you believe in destiny?
Destiny is for the poor.
Are you a good cook?
Cookery is also for the poor.
What do you think happens after you die?
I can only imagine the Garden has a power structure of its own.
Did you have to grow up fast?
No. My father was a man of limited vision but he knew enough to reach a comfortable level of power before siring an heir.
Who do you look up to?
I will begrudgingly concede admiration for the Honourable Company, which came from nowhere and purchased our city wholesale.
When you go to a tavern, what do you order?
Claret or cherry liqueur.
What do you like most about yourself?
I do not suffer fools.
What do you like least about yourself?
It seems I am susceptible to taking my eye off the ball where particular fools are concerned.
Do you want kids someday?
They are a regrettable necessity.
Are you a planner or more spontaneous?
There is always and only the plan.
Can you keep a secret?
Impregnably.
Do you like being the centre of attention?
Perhaps, if the attention is respectful or afraid.
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
A day is nowhere near enough time to impress the fullness of the plan upon my heir, but I would have no option but to try.
Do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?
It is a means to an end, nothing more.
Where do you feel safe?
In my office, behind my desk.
Do you love or hate being alone?
The peace and quiet can be useful, so long as the servants remain no more than a call away.
What’s the last nightmare you remember having?
We named him Hugo and he’s still around.
Do you admit to mistakes when you make them?
Showing weakness only gives others ideas beyond their station.
Do you want to grow up to be like your parents?
Better.
How do you deal with being sick? Are you stoic or super whiney?
I have things to do, but I may take it out on those I can afford to.
What did your parents expect from you when you were born?
Nothing quite as grand as they should have.
Do you have a strong sense of style?
It doesn’t do to fall outside the etiquette of the times.
Would you rather camp outdoors or stay the night in an inn?
I’m neither a stray dog nor a queer poet. I’ll take the inn.
Is there a food that most people like but you absolutely hate?
Can’t really see the appeal in most vegetables, but I eat them out of propriety.
Are you more of a hoarder or a minimalist?
A hoarder, but mostly of wealth.
Are you superstitious?
There are very many powers worth accounting for, but more than people realise can be neutralised with sufficient wealth.
Are you the kind of person who remembers people’s birthdays and pet’s names and stuff?
I have people for that.
What do you do to feel better when you’re sad?
I take to my accounts and I make some money.
Is it hard for you to trust someone?
Not at all. Everyone has their price.
Are you susceptible to peer pressure?
I don’t have time to figure out who counts as a peer.
If you decided to stop adventuring and settle down, what kind of job would you take?
Banker.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Initially a banker like my father, before I learned to think bigger.
