History
Gnomes were created by their patron deity, often referred to as the Gnomish Edar, as part of Aedar's grand plan. Initially, all gnomes were one people, curious and inventive by nature. However, their small stature made them vulnerable to larger, more aggressive races.
Faced with constant threats, gnomes adapted by developing their natural talents for stealth and illusion magic. They decided to separate into different environments where they could best hide and thrive.
Forest Gnomes retreated into dense woodlands, becoming masters of woodland magic and illusion. They developed strong connections to nature and fey creatures, often serving as guardians of forests or as intermediaries between other races and fey.
Rock Gnomes chose to inhabit hilly and mountainous regions, excelling in engineering and tinkering. They became renowned for their technological innovations and love of gemstones. Rock Gnomes are often found in hidden mountain communities or integrated into larger cities as skilled artisans.
Deep Gnomes, also known as Svirfneblin, ventured into the Underdark, developing unique abilities to survive in the hostile subterranean world. They adapted to life underground with stone-like skin and superior darkvision. Deep Gnomes maintain secluded communities, ever wary of other Underdark denizens.
This diaspora led to the development of distinct subraces, each adapting to their new environments while maintaining the core gnomish traits of curiosity, creativity, and magical aptitude. Despite their separation, the different gnome subraces maintain connections through secret networks and occasional gatherings.
Gnomes are known for their long lifespans, often living up to 500 years. They have a natural affinity for illusion magic and mechanical tinkering. Gnomish culture highly values individuality, creativity, and humor. They often act as intermediaries or advisors to other races, using their unique perspectives and skills to solve problems.
Throughout their history, gnomes have continued to adapt and thrive, turning their initial vulnerability into a strength through cunning, innovation, and magical prowess. Their societies, while often hidden or secretive, have become integral parts of the world's magical and technological development.
