Makos Species in Pakkiila | World Anvil

Makos (May·ko)

Makos are a gentle species, all with great care for nature and creatures alike. Many experts for conservation and the prevention of habitat loss are Makos, as they have an enhanced sense of empathy for non-sapient creatures. You would, too, if you shared limited facial emotive capabilities.

Makos are deeply creative, making great and beautiful works of art in unique ways in their underwater cities. Makos are also sometimes referred to as the best architects on Pakkiila, using their great strength and clever minds to make breathtaking marine structures.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Makos are tetrapod mammals, which mimic any and every type of shark. They have digitigrade legs, and ambulate rather uniquely. They walk bipedally, but run quadrupedally. Makos have five fingered hands, but three toed feet.

Makos are naturally chunky, having evolved to retain fat thanks to the cold waters necessitating it. Makos also have gills, allowing them to breathe water. Makos can also breathe above water, but need to occasionally swim to keep their skin and gills wet. If left without any contact with water for too long, Makos may begin to suffocate.

Makos have somewhat limited facial expression abilities. What this looks like depends on the Mako, some semi-permanently frown, some smile all the time, and some may just look eternally neutral.

Genetics and Reproduction

Makos have twelve month long pregnancies, often only having one-to-two pups at a time. They give birth via oviviviparity, beginning as eggs before hatching during the pregnancy. Yes, it is very weird. Don't look at me, look at real life sharks.

Growth Rate & Stages

Makos grow generally slower compared to other sapient species. They are considered "mini-adults" at around 20, being allowed to be mostly independent at that time, and are then considered actual, full adults at 30 when they stop maturing.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Makos are carnivores by build, many needing at least some meat in their diet to be healthy. Aside from that, many Makos enjoy sweet treats and fruits!
