Shadowlands Geographic Location in Pairi Daēza, the Walled Garden | World Anvil

Shadowlands

The realm of the dead. A dark shadow of the material realm.   The Shadowlands is not exactly its own place - rather, it is a plane aligned with the material plane, overlaying it. From the Shadowlands, the material plane can be seen, though it is hazy and indistinct. Buildings, especially ruins, resonate here and have solid Shadowlands copies, though they tend to embody concepts more than simple physical space.   Mortals can be seen more easily than landscape, here. Upon passing, the spirits of mortals, at least briefly, transition to this plane before moving on.

Geography

In its natural state, the Shadowlands is featureless and grey, as it represents a boundary that both touches the material plane and the among other places) and has elements of both.   However, the Shadowlands resonates strongly with the material plane, and takes on aspects of the locations touching it. The local terrain, buildings (if they are old enough, and especially ruins), and sometimes events (past, present, or future) are represented here, indistinct and hazy.   Deeper in the Shadowlands, the Eternal Library represents a spot of color and light, and tends to draw in visitors.

Fauna & Flora

Very little lives here, though it is not entirely uninhabited. Psychopomps call the Shadowlands home, and the undead have a strong presence here.

Natural Resources

The Shadowlands has little in the way of natural resources, though, with the proper application of magic, copies of things from the material plane can be harvested for semi-real shadows.
