The Defender And The Beast

"Hold the line! Fire at my mark! Three! Two! One! Fire!" The defender opened fire, as did his fellow soldiers. The Ursa Major stampede was approaching fast, but if they all shot properly, that should be no problem. They all had trained for this. But no training can prepare one for the scare when dozens of creatures thrice your size run at you with foam around their mouths, berserk and ignoring all the pain you're inflicting on them.   Hold the line. If you run, you die, as does everyone else. Didn't stop some from panicking and fleeing as far too few animals fell to the floor during their charge. The others simply lacked the courage to flee. Overcome by fear, all the defender could do was keep firing. The first of the creatures was about to reach him, and all he could do was hope it would be quick. But just as the claw came down on him, he saw a shadow move in front. A tower shield blocked the attack, then a spear drove straight through the beast's heart.   More shields and spears appeared, followed by a rain of high-caliber bullets ripping through skulls. They were saved. The Battle Spears had arrived just in time.
