Shadowtalks Tradition / Ritual in Out of the Shadows | World Anvil

Shadowtalks

Outsiders often believe the Dutch Penose are a unified front. Insiders know that's a blatant lie. The leaders have their own conflicts, as evident from the two liquidation waves in the past decade. As a result, they do not trust each other. Face-to-face meetings are rare, a paranoia that has resulted in them not even meeting each other in the Matrix directly.   While individual Penose leaders usually operate by themselves, occasionally they still need to meet. Large operations require cooperation, but a physical meeting is nothing but a security risk. As such, they developed a way of meeting that some snickeringly call 'Shadowtalks'.

The Technology

A Shadowtalk meeting is performed through large tridscreens combined with cameras, that face each other so that every camera can see all other screens. Each leader will attend by connecting to one of the screens, which will display their own image. Often these images are in the form of a silhouette, as to hide physical condition of the crimelore.   Furthermored, daisychaining burner commlinks and other methods are used by the most paranoid leaders, to make it harder to trace them. Those with a known home-base tend to just connect directly from their individual host, with Spiders assigned to help keep their connection safe.   By connecting through individual screens, the leaders are never present in the same place in the Matrix, making it much harder to hack or trace the entire group. On the flipside, the silhouette habit makes it easier to fake attendance, so in turn significant security protocols were implemented to verify one's identity.
