The Great War Military Conflict in Ouresboros | World Anvil

The Great War

While the Imelian continent has always know one form of conflict or another, it was especially the Great War that ravaged the continent at the cost of countless of lives.   The great war was no a singular conflict. For centuries tensions between the various Imelian royal houses had been building up. When socio-economic turmoil increased, brought on by ever increasing technological advancements, the powder-keg that had been building up beneath a series of failed diplomatic intervention, international incidents and burgeoning nationalism, came to an horrifying explosion.

The First Front: Crown vs Algiss Pact

The first shot of the war is believed the have been the sinking of an Imperial Nostres cargo vessel, of the coast of Burgiss. This announced the start of a conflict between the Crown Pact and the Algiss pact.

The Second Front: The Altames Expansion

With the Crown Pact caught up in their own war, the Altames Union saw its chance to implement its expansionist policies. By the end of 1865, Altames troops had started to occupying Balosian border towns to the east. Balos a country that was still in transitioning from a feudal system, had no longer a standing army and the local militias were no match for the better trained and better equiped invasion force.

During the beginning of 1866, Altames would start occupying Ghistan and Vadrian border towns as well. Petria, fearing an invasion of their own border region, immediately dispatched its army to the north.
The Altames king had anticipated this move and in secrecy a pact had been made with his cousin, the king of Edrania.
As soon as the Petrian troops were deployed along the Northern border, Edranian forces supported by their traditional Stolesian allies, invaded from the West.

Neutral Berrica

Under the rule of King Gwer I, Berrica had steadily followed an isolationist course. Vadrian and Ghistan requests for support were rebuked and the Berrican crown certainly didn't feel like helping its traditional enemy, Petria.
Five years into the war this would eventually change, as the King decided to change his isolationist policy under mounting pressure from the public.

Neutral Brastia & Neutral Roportass

Brastia and Roportass remained neutral during most of the 70 years of the Great War. The two nations would face some skirmishes along their borders, but due their geographic location, it was very hard to mount any kind of invasion. It also helped that Brastia enjoyed the support of the famed warriors of the Uld Ewain and Roportass still had the backing of the complete Xotol union, the biggest armed fleet in the world.
The two nations would go on, to receive millions refugees running away from the ever increasing violence that was ravaging the continent.

The Petria-Berrican Alliance

By 1870 Berrican public opinion had noticeably started turning agains the crown. With both Vandria & Petria in flames, Berrican citizens felt they were failing their neighbours. Encourage by all the 7 councils, the king eventually agreed to start offering logistic and medical support to both Petria and Vandria.
Altames officials warned that this would void the Neutral status of Berrica, but the king assured that it was strictly humanitarian aid, that was being offered.
During the summer of 1871 the war seemed to die down and rumours started going around about cease fire being signed between Altames and Petria, with the occupied zones becoming no-mans land until an official peace agreement could be signed. Sadly this turned out to be nothing but a ruse. By the end of the summer in 1872, Berrican ships started reporting hit and run attacks by unmarked ships. Altames denied any involvement, but the ships albeit flagless, were reported to originate from Stamlin ports.
Once this was confirmed by Berrican spies, war was officially declared. A pact was signed with Petria. Troops were send to the mainland to support their Petrian allies and the Berrican fleet, the second most power fleet in the world after the Xotol Union, set sail for Middeland Sea, to lay sieg to the coasts of Edrania and Stamlin.

Trecht Peace Agreement & The Roportass Concord

While the war officially lasted for 70 years, some periods were marked with a decrease in conflict. However these periods would always be quickly over, with violence flaring up again for the smallest of reasons. It was however the Trecht Peace Agreement that would set in motion the end of the war. After the agreement was signed in 1910, the Crown Pact would cease all hostilities with their Western neighbours, instead focusing their efforts on an ever expansion hungry Altames.
Now being faced with military pressure on all fronts, Altames declared a unilateral cease-fire. Grown tired of this endless war the Crown Pact, the Petria-Berrican alliance and the Balosian resistance agreed. Three months later the Roportass Concord was signed, calling an official end to the Great War.
