The Planar Convergence Physical / Metaphysical Law in Ostyria | World Anvil

The Planar Convergence

Starting during the Age of Miracles, the Planar Convergence was a wide-scale event that saw many of the planes of existence incur upon the prime material plane threatening to destroy it wholly. Rifts to other planes would tear through the fabric of reality and manifest themselves on the material plane wreaking havoc on the population and causing grand scale destruction and death.

The gods, present on the material plane at this time, fought to curb the disastrous effects of the Planar Convergence before it got worse but ran into opposition as some gods defected and fought to keep it going. The battle that ensued because of this dissension was the final piece needed to turn the Planar Convergence into the greatest known cataclysmic event, shaping Ostyria into the world it is today.

Not much is known about how exactly the Planar Convergence started but there are theories that circulate around religious and historical circles, none of which can be truly verified. The most popular theory and the one that drives the religious division in the divine pantheon between the Prime Deities and the Eclipsed is that the Betrayer orchestrated the event in an attempt to destroy or take over Ostyria.

Manifestation

The rifts caused by the Planar Convergence varied in size and magnitude, their colors matched the scheme of the plane they originated from. Generally the larger the rift the more destruction was caused in the surrounding area. The rifts sometimes carried with them creatures some hostile some not. They could transform the land into mockeries of its plane of origin or completely sunder them.

Localization

A few rifts were drawn to major nexuses of magic called Knots and formed anchors on those locations causing the rifts to stay longer and become fiercer. Some portions of the land were unable to withstand the rifts and were completely taken over and/or transformed. Lanfe is a continent forever changed by the Planar Convergence as the rifts caused it to be the hellish landscape it is today, ruled by fiends. The Planar Convergence transformed the people of Zoan into anthropomorphic beings and most of Iya is lost due to permanent rifts that reformed the various sectors of the city.

The only land spared from true transformation was Duankh but reminders of the Planar Convergence linger as the city-state of Shuphyr is suspended in the sky above Duankh in a rift between the material plane and the Primordial Plane of Air, and the abandoned city of Waikusa swims beneath the ocean, in a rift between the material plane and the Primordial Plane of Water. Echoes of the Convergence also plague Duankh unceasingly.
