Lanterns

All Lantern bearers go through a ritual in their training and initiation that has them bond with a unique magical foci known as the Lantern. At first glance, the Lanterns look like any other hooded lantern of the day. In the hands of a Lantern Bearer, however it can be used as a divining and scrying foci.
The art of making the Lanterns was lost long ago. Only the Lanterns currently in existence within the organization are circulated. This means that great care is taken to recover them in the event a Bearer perishes in his duties. The Lantern Bearers do not share their secrets of the Lanterns with anyone besides those in the order. This means that the extremely rare rogue Bearer is hunted down ruthlessly to ensure his or her Lantern does not fall into anyone's hands outside the order.
Lantern Bearers are under constant scrutiny even once admitted to the Order before they are given a Lantern. It is a source of pride and dedication.
The powers the foci give the Bearer also varies from person to person. Some can see brief glimpses of the future or past when lit, others can see extreme distances in the present time of events happening elsewhere. The one similarity is the all Lanterns give the Bearer a special sight that allows them to see through illusion and identify Void creatures and power. Voidshapers usually utilize illusions to mask their Void-touched abilities and taint. The act of using the Lantern to see these things is an actual battle of will and power between the Bearer and the Voidshaper however, so the Lantern is not fool-proof and some powerful Voidshapers go unnoticed and undiscovered for many years or decades even when under the scutiny of a Lantern Bearer and his or her foci.

Raw materials & Components

Varies by individual lantern. Some are made of cast iron, others copper or brass. The one item all share is a "shard of the Creator," a small uninteresting looking stone placed in the base of the Lantern.
