Erelyn Forgewright Character in Orr | World Anvil

Erelyn Forgewright

(a.k.a. Eri, Erelynne)

Description:

Rimmed in thick, ebony lashes, her eyes are the highlight of her face. They're like a winter morning: crisp and laced with feathers of frost. They refract light, much like faceted gems can, from a face that is fresh and clear of blemish.   Those familiar with her may note that the timber of her voice has softened and the terror in her eyes has diminished. She is quiet and reserved, though, and ever watchful. She's always armed, but the old, worn mining pick she used to keep tucked in her belt is gone. Around her neck is a short gold chain and from it dangles a small locket. The face of the locket is etched with a family crest: a hammer twined with a rose.   Uncovered, her arms bear a series of parallel scars (seven on each) in neat striations down the length of each arm. Each line is roughly two inches wide and they begin at the ball of her shoulder joint, stepping down until they reach just above her elbows. This same pattern of scarring can be found, though not as persistent, down the front of each of her thighs. The topside of her left forearm is tattooed with the rune carving for Sacrifice.

There are some details in her description (locket, mining pick, tatoo, scarification) that make me ask, 'What is the story behind that?' :)

Good! I haven't figured out yet how to divulge, or even how much to divulge in terms of histories. I feel like bulleted lists might be easier to digest, but the compulsion to just WRITE EVERYTHING is strong. And then I wonder, would there be any reason to actually write their stories?   What do you think? Hit the highlights or summarize?   I am really enjoying the in-depth worldbuilding, but this is the first time I've ever done it to this extent. A story/novel doesn't need so much detail; it only needs to convince the reader it has that much detail. But, for a gaming or RP environment, people want a complete picture.

I'm a rpg'er turned writer turned world building junkie, so I'm not sure you should be taking my advice. :) I've just completely given in the the compulsion to write everything. Depends on what you're goals are.   I'm just looking it as a reader who always wants to know more. If this character is background, more detail would be OK I think. But if she is a major character or a protagonist, then maybe keep it light. But I think its mostly about what you want to spend your effort on. For me, I'm just enjoying writing around a 250-300 word article a day. I have a bunch of geographic/cultural/technological/mystical type empty articles sitting there waiting for me to write them and fill in what I consider gaps. Pretty much everything I'm adding in my world is big picture stuff, or major figures in history and/or leaders, so it won't affect stories I write.

Loving this character. So many questions. The scars are they ritualistic or is she counting. Why is the mining pick gone? Is there a family tragedy unfolding or perhaps already completed. Is she seeking revenge? SO many questions. Love this :)

Thanks for the comment! And I am still working on a consistent template for characters so I cover everything I want to include. Histories will be added with time as I work them into and fix the inconsistencies in the timelines I have. I'll give you a sneak peek and an answer to your first question: Yes. :)   (I know, so helpful.)   I've been combing through the Shard, too. Looks like we both have a fascination with crystals. \o/
