Observency

Founded shortly after the events of the Brightening, the religion known as Observency has faithful who believe they are "watched over," by the god of the two moons. That Which Watches Over Us is a divine being who is believed to have protected Its followers from the cataclysm when the sky was opened by the Brightcasters. There is no sense, however, that those who died were punished in some way. Rather, the malevolent god of the sun came and took them from the Watcher, and so everyone must rally together to push that god away and live as one. Priests and priestesses of Observency are called "Watchers," with the First Watcher being the head of the priesthood.   The religion focuses on three key ideals: awareness, community, and protection. Having faith in one's own instincts and sense of awareness is key to following the Watcher, and can assist the deity in looking after those around them. The more people that show acute awareness, the more the God can aid them. There is also a strong belief in collective effort among the faithful. Since they were spared from the Brightening, followers of the Watcher believe they must work together to survive and rebuild. Only by doing so do people become stronger. Lastly, protecting one's neighbors is of paramount importance for those watched over. Priests and followers will often visit the homes of others in their towns, checking in on them and offering a service of some sort.   The phases of the moons are important to the Observency calendar. A night when both moons are full is when the Watcher "has both eyes open," and is considered a holy night of rest, though those taking part in the Time Above rite of passage do not observe rest on that day. Conversely, when neither moon is visible, the Watcher is "asleep," and it is up to the faithful to exhibit more vigilance, and offer more assistance and protection to one's neighbors.
