Dayblindness

Dayblindness is a Condition generally only suffered by nightshades that leaves them unable to see properly in daylight and other bright areas. Although unwise behaviour can lead to it occurring at a young age, most sufferers are in their dotage.

Causes

Nightshades' innate Night Sight allows them to function as easily in complete darkness as full light. If this is relied upon too much, without the person spending enough time outside or in well-lit indoor areas, their eyes can maladapt.   Even when they take great care to avoid that problem, dayblindness is a problem that will catch up with them eventually. It if rare for a nightshade to reach their 70s without having suffered at least one episode. If someone suffers an earlier attack without receiving proper treatment, however, it can become a chronic problem much earlier.

Symptoms

The Condition presents initially as discomfort in bright sunlight. This does not compromise vision, but can lead to squinting. Full onset is defined by the inability to distinguish colour accurately in daylight conditions. This progresses to an inability to distinguish shapes. All symptoms will gradually manifest in darker conditions, until the sufferers only has unimpaired vision in conditions of near-total darkness.

Treatment

When the Condition initially presents, a standard healixir can correct it. However, once the Condition has become well-established this recovery is only temporary. It becomes prohibitively expensive, in terms of money and Fatigue, to drink another healixir once the last wears off.   Chronic sufferers usually have to stay in dimly-lit areas and wear eye-masks with narrow slits when they go outside during the day. Scholars in the Northern Safe Zone have developed smoked glass spectacles that offer some relief, but their use has not spread elswhere.
