Shrine of Alene

Purpose / Function

The shrine of Alene was an ancient hall built to the honour of the goddess of magic, Alene, sometime around 700 to 600 DT. While the shrine originally was the main place at which ceremonies honouring her were held, the main purpose grew to be a pilgrimage for those learning magic to take in order to show dedication and gain through this the power they wished to have. As times moved towards modernity, this became less of a pilgrimage and more of a visit, but even in the years leading up to it's destruction magic students still visited at least once within their lifetimes as it was a crucial stage of the magic process; the only other way to gain the ability to use magic was to contact the goddess through some other means, such as intense prayer or a lesser shrine. These lesser shrines worked less often, but could be found more easily; after the main shrine's destruction, these became the main way to gain magic as a Sorcerer.

Architecture

The shrine was built with Gothic Architecture, using typical qualities of this style such as high, arched ceilings, thick, white stone walls and large glass windows. The main shrine itself was a large, rectangular room with the wall opposite the large wooden doors being curved and holding the shrine itself, with small rooms on each of the longer sides holding sleeping places for the devotees of Alene who wished to stay in the shrine at it's prime.

History

Built sometime around 700-600 DT, the shrine was widely known as the main shrine of Alene, and grew in popularity over many years. Around 750 CE, however, as the anti-magic movement building within Astrya began to gain support from notable figures, attendance of visitors to the shrine dipped largely and it experienced some counts of violence against it and vandalism. In 767 CE this came to a boiling point as the shrine was ransacked and destroyed; the few attendants and visitors of the shrine who remained there at that point were killed and the building itself was raided for all valuables and then destroyed. Some parts were burned, windows were smashed, doors were knocked in, some walls were even partially or fully destroyed with siege weaponry to the point that the ruins are roofless and open, lying decrepit and in disrepair. Though a small group of magical and pro-magic people attempted to fund a repair, there was no support given to them from the monarchy, and when the 769 CE Magical Ban came into affect the group was forced to disband for personal safety.
