Session 87: When Last We Met 7.27.24

General Summary

When last we met, the party followed a mysterious voice through a temple, only to be met with a Medusa who instantly tried to attack the party. A battle ensued as her and her two Basilisk pets set their attacks on the party including nearly turning Vandread to stone! 
The party turned the tables with good strategy however as the Basilisks fell right into Mistral's Spike Growth trap and Vandread ended up knocking the Medusa prone with one of his attacks. A series of ranged attacks from Mistral and Celeste later, and the Medusa succumbed to sweet death after who knows how many centuries of Endless life. The basilisks too met their end as Maleeka used magic missile to end one and Celeste put two arrows through the head of the other after it was knocked into the water by Mistral's Eldritch blast. 
With the battle over, The party sets to trying to find a way out. Well most of them two. Some take to trying to harvest The medusa and basilisks for useful parts with some moderate success. Meanwhile, instead of a way out, Romaia finds a mysterious chest behind the Medusa's throne. She casts detect magic on it but feels no aura of the arcane. Being extra cautious, Vandread has his steel defender opent he chest. She does and it is merely filled with gold, jewels. and... Something else. There is a circular stone tablet about the size of a dinner plate. It is inscribed with strange patterns that don't seem to hold any linguistic significance. 
Having run out of options, Maleeka puts for the idea of teleporting the party out of wherever they are. They accept and decide to have her teleport them to as close to Olorun as possible. As she makes preparations to cast the spell, Mistral and Vandread decide they wanna go home with the very ornate throne in the middle of the chamber. So they pack that away and Maleeka speaks the word to teleport them. 
Something is amiss as the party find themselves teleported to some sort of beach. It is the middle of the night and the only light the party sees comes from a campire a few feet away. Seated at the campfire, the party recognizes The man who introduced himself as Nyarlathotep, The speaker for the King in Yellow. He smiles obligingly and tells the party to sit at the fire with him. 
He lets on he knows the party faced off against a medusa and that they found a map. The party feigns ignorance to his insinuations, but he presses that he was the one who brought them to this spot and wouldn't have if they weren't successful in recovering the map. The party asks where the map leads and he states that it will bring them to the location of an item called the Book of Vile Darkness. The item which The King in Yellow seems to be searching for. 
The party then question him about his motives and why he is being so helpful all of a sudden. He states that he is just an outside observer. A spectator of what he calls this great game of good and evil. As trivial as these concepts are to him he still relishes in the spectacle of it all. Sebastian confirms that he is an embodiment of an entity known as the crawling chaos. A sort of Trickster god in this otherworldly Pantheon, of Which Hastur, aka the King in Yellow is also a part of. 
Realizing they are in the presence of something more than a mere man,  with powers they can't possibly fathom,They decide to let him help them read this map of theirs. At Nyarlathotep's instruction, Mistral removes it from his bag of holding and is instructed to wait until the cloud cover moves to unobstruct the moonlight which then proceeds to shine down on them and the circular tablet begins glowing with an exponentially brighter light. 
And that's where we'll pick up next time!

Nyarlathotep - An outer god affectionately called "The Crawling Chaos". He began as a herald for The King in Yellow but seems to have turned coat and is helping the party for his own amusement. He shows the party how to read the map that will lead to the Book fo Vile Darkness
