Elf

Elves have existed since before known time. They originated in the southern continent, as have most humanoid species, and spread across the world. They dominated much fo the world before the ice age, but the ice age led to major divisions among the elves, as different groups reacted differently to the threat. Now, they are broken into several sub-groups, who often hate one another more than they hate any other creatures. Elves live a long time and have excellent memories, so know how to hate well.

History

They originated in the southern continent, then spread throughout most of the world. Like humans and other related groups, they are extremely adaptable.   At some point in their early history, they were infected with magic. This changed them, giving them innate magical abilities, extending their life spans, and so on. They evolved into what we know as elves (from being something close to human, if not exactly human.) They lived across much of the world, especially in the north. Then came a great ice age, which threatened everything living in the north. Elves reacted in different ways: some stayed in the north, and found ways to cope with the cold; some went underground; some moved south, for warmer climes. Other human-like groups either disappeared completely, or were greatly reduced by this climatic change. Over time, the three main elvish responses to the cold led them to develop into three main branches of elves. The ones who stayed in the north, who adapted to the cold, or used magic to survive in and around the ice, became the High Elves. Those who went underground, evolved into Drow. And those who moved south became what is usually known as Wood Elves.   When the ice age ended, the different groups came back into contact with one another. At this point, the High Elves and Drow each claimed lordship over the other, and this soon led to red war between them. Generations of elves fought on land and under the ground, and in the end, both groups were much reduced from their original strength, and never quite recovered. Drow retreated under the earth and embraced their evil, so to speak; High Elves remained in the woods and mountains of the far north, and remained isolated and hostile to almost all other groups. Wood Elves slowly returned to the north, and were caught up in this endless war, tghough without the zeal of the High Elves. Being creatures of the sun and moon, they allied with the High Elves. They were more used to other species, though, and remained on terms with humans and others after the war.
