Numarian Theology

The pantheon (locally referred to as the Numares - pronounced nu-ma-rez) is composed of ten deities. There are two Creators: Kaiora - the Goddess of Chaos, and Oneir - the God of Order. In addition to the Creators, there exist eight more deities, who each preside over a domain of Orbis.   It is an accepted truth that the denizens of Orbis worship and follow the same pantheon through varying beliefs and mythologies. The numari refer to the deities as the Numares, believing that their influence and favor are strongest on the continent of Numaria.

The Numares

Oneir - the God of Order

Patron deity of scholars and leaders   As one of the First Creators, the Lord of Order sits at the head of the Numares alongside his lover, the goddess Kaiora. He oversees the natural order of the world and ensures that balance amongst mortal forces is maintained.

Kaiora - the Goddess of Chaos

Patron deity of artists and lovers   As one of the First Creators, Lady of Chaos sits at the head of the Numares alongside her lover, the god Oneir. She delights in the chaotic spontaneity of her mortal creations, and is often associated with creativity and luck.

Solis - the God of the Sun and Fire

Patron deity of smiths, crafters, and scientists   The Sun God's domain is the touch of the sun's light, the burning heat of a flame, and all manners of energy.

Oara - the Goddess of Nature

Patron deity of families, agriculture, and alchemists   The Queen of Harvest nurtures all plant life and natural treasures of the soil.

Marus - the God of the Sea and Water

Patron deity of those who seek safety and prosperity on water   The Commander of the Seas rules over all watery domains and the creatures that call them home.

Ceria - the Goddess of the Sky and Wind

Patron deity of travelers and adventurers   The Mistress of the Sky controls the weather and the seasons with but a single breath.

Daeros - the God of Battle and Strife

Patron deity of warriors, strategists, and conflict   The Vengeful God revels in all battles and in the ever-shifting tides of war.

Zora - the Goddess of Beasts and Hunting

Patron deity of hunters and animal-keepers   The Eternal Huntress oversees all the beasts and creatures that roam the lands and skies.

Noctis - the God of Night and Shadows

Deity of night, darkness, and dreams   Alongside his sister, Nycis, represents one of the twin moons that haunt the night sky. Noctis has not been shown to contribute magic to mortals.

Nycis - the Goddess of Death and Renewal

Gatekeeper of the Ocasus   Alongside her brother, Noctis, represents one of the twin moons that haunt the night sky. Nycis has not been shown to contribute magic to mortals.

The Birth of the World

The two Creators are lovers, each needing the other in order to exist in balance and perfection. To demonstrate their devotion, the two created Orbis (from orbari meaning “creation” in Old Numarian) and its twin moons as a gift to one another. From Orbis and its moons came the rest of the Numares, springing forth from their respective domains and claiming them for their own.   Kaiora gazed lovingly at their creation, yet felt that it was not enough. It was then that she created the first mortals and gave them powers to match her own. However, knowing that their power had no bounds, the first mortals became arrogant. They disobeyed the will of the Numares and attempted to assert themselves over them. This deeply displeased Oneir, the Lord of Order, who banished the prideful first mortals to Ocasus, and they became the first demons, known as the Praetari.   Oneir formed a second plane of existence (the first being Orbis) and separated them. The high plane is Altis, the ethereal home of the Numares. The low plane is Orbis, the physical plane that is now home to mortals.   Kaiora delighted in filling Orbis with the numari. They populated the world and their antics were pleasing to the gods. But the Numares longed to leave their mark on Orbis beyond the limitations of their own domain. They decided they would gift the numari with magic, imbuing Orbis with their energy to be harnessed by its denizens.

The Afterlife: Ocasus

Departed souls enter Ocasus (from a phrase meaning “awakening” in Old Numarian) upon death. It is there that departed souls are judged by the goddess, Nycis. Those who are deemed worthy to re-enter Orbis go through a rebirthing process, being assigned new life by Nycis based on their deeds in their previous one.   Those whose deeds have been judged particularly despicable by Nycis are reborn as lesser demons. These foul creatures are cursed to wander Ocasus, haunted by their past and tormented by the Praetari demons imprisoned within the realm.
