Tracy Jacob Clark

President Tracy Jacob Clark

Tracy Jacob Clark (commonly TJ Clark or Jacob Clark) was President of the United North American States from 2259 to 2263. Clark assumed the Presidency after the assassination of his running mate, President Julio Santiago. President Clark was widely unpopular and had a low approval rating by the time of his abdication in 2263. Many blamed him for getting the UNAS into the War of the Americas and for alienating Mexican-Americans into seceding from the UNAS.

Assuming Office

Vice President Clark was traveling to Most Mira Station - Мост Мира Станция aboard a Surface To Orbit Shuttle when President Santiago was assassinated. Clark was sworn in as President in microgravity - a first in North American history - before an audience of reporters and staff. He continued on to Most Mira under the escort of the TASA Space Corps to ensure his safety and the continuity of UNAS government in case the assassination was not an isolated incident.

Undoing Santiago's Legacy

Clark made no secret about his dislike of Santiago's pro-Mexican policies. Within a month of assuming office, President Clark began undoing Santiago's policies, especially trade deals and domestic policies. This sparked outrage and protests across the Southern states of the UNAS.   The Confederation of Southern Nations - Confederación de las Naciones del Sur had been working to thaw relations with the UNAS under Santiago's administration. The CNS feared this progress would not continue under Clark, and preemptively increased their military posture in Central America and Cuba Norte.

Crackdowns

Clark was extremely paranoid of "subversive" elements in American society, particularly secessionist movements from Quebec to Texas to Mexico (though Mexican secession wasn't a serious concern until the events of his presidency). Clark directed intelligence agencies to closely monitor these groups and find any evidence that could lead to arrests. This arguably led to further dissent among disenfranchised groups in America.   Clark justified his actions by citing the growing threat of war with the CNS. He argued that the UNAS needed to present a united front - politically and socially - to deter war. Any deviation from the established ideals of what he called "The Great American Society", were a risk to National Security (if not a CNS plot directly).
