Olivia Allard Character in Opposition: Mars | World Anvil

Olivia Allard

Olivia Allard (a.k.a. Moonchild)

Olivia Allard was the first human to be born on the moon. She was a survivor of World War 3 and a member of Luna's Lucky Seven.   Olivia was born to Justin and Patricia Allard, a US Marine and NASA research assistant respectively. The Allard's had Olivia while stationed at Tranquility Base on the Earth's moon Luna in 2113. Olivia's birth was the subject of much public spectacle and private concern, as there was no precedent for her situation. Scientists were worried that the pregnancy would not be viable, or that Olivia would suffer severe birth defects due to cosmic radiation and decreased gravity. Additionally, Patricia did not become aware of the pregnancy for several months, mistaking the symptoms for more mundane Lunar health issues. By the time the pregnancy was officially diagnosed and disclosed, physicians were unsure if returning to Earth to carry the child to term would induce more stress on the unborn child.   PolyGen Biotechnics reached out to the Allards, offering to edit the genomic makeup of their unborn child using some of the resiliency adaptations developed under the Synthetically Adapted Human Beings Project. Dr. Anna Larsson herself visited the family on Luna to make an appeal. Publicly, Dr. Larsson claimed to have been moved by the family's plight, acting purely out of empathy and altruism. Many believed her motivations were far more pragmatic, jumping at the opportunity to exploit the family's situation for research. The Allards declined Dr. Larsson's offer, instead choosing to carry the child to term without any extreme changes or treatments. Regardless, Olivia was delivered by cesarean section to avoid any potential complications of natural childbirth.   Olivia was studied throughout her first few years of development, exhibiting abnormally rapid limb growth and diminished bone and muscle density, but otherwise minimal complications to that point. All research on Olivia ceased when World War 3 broke out.   Olivia's father Justin was killed in action during the opening assault of the Battle of Tranquility Base. Patricia and many of the other civilian colonists sought shelter away from the fighting, but the battle tore through the colony rupturing compartments and corridors all throughout the complex. Patricia, with Olivia in tow, eventually found refuge with a group of survivors including Stefan Belic and Irena Chen-Meyer.   After the battle, it eventually became clear the survivors could not stay at the crippled colony. This meant they would have to set out on foot on the harsh Lunar surface and seek entry to China's Lunar colony, Chang'e City. The colonists soon realized they had no way to transport Olivia, so Stefan and a few others worked quickly to design and fashion together a makeshift vacuum-capable child carrier pod to carry Olivia in for their journey. Bringing Olivia along ultimately saved the Tranquility Base survivors, as the Chairman of Chang'e City could not bring himself to let a child die through his inaction.   When the Lunar survivors were forced to cull their numbers to conserve resources, Olivia was the first of the eight chosen to remain alive due to her youth. She eventually became one of the seven Lunar colonists to ultimately survive World War 3. Unlike her daughter, Patricia was not selected to be one of the eight, so she asked Stefan to look after her daughter. Olivia and Stefan grew close, and eventually became romantically involved. After rescue, the two eventually married and had a child of their own, Selena Belic.   Olivia remained on the Moon after the Seven were rescued. Her lifetime of development on Luna would have made life on Earth painful if not fatal altogether. Olivia had spent her entire life on the Moon and felt that it was the only home for her. She and Stefan remained active in the Lunar community, helping to rebuild and restore Tranquility Base to its former glory.
