Miranda Winters Character in Opposition: Mars | World Anvil

Miranda Winters

Major Miranda Winters

Miranda Winters was a survivor of World War 3 and a member of Luna's Lucky Seven.   Prior to World War 3, Miranda had served first in NASA, then in the US Space Corps as a shuttle pilot. Before the Battle of Tranquility Base, Winters had been piloting a Lunar Lander to bring supplies to Tranquility Base and evacuate roughly a dozen VIPs from the colony. When the battle broke out, her Lander was shot down by a Chinese guided missile drone.   Miranda survived the crash, but her copilot and most of the VIPs were killed or gravely wounded. As the only able bodied survivor, she set out for Tranquility Base to get help, but found the colony in tatters. By the time Miranda was able to organize a rescue party from among the Tranquility Base survivors, the last of her crew and passengers had already passed away.   Miranda was instrumental in organizing the American Lunar survivors as one of the few remaining individuals with military training including advanced survival training. She also helped organize the salvage of critical systems from Tranquility Base.   When the Lunar survivors were forced to cull their numbers to conserve resources, Miranda was one of the eight selected to remain alive, becoming one of the seven Lunar colonists to survive World War 3. Miranda handled communications with Earth and worked with the rescue mission control to provide guidance from the ground.   After rescue, Miranda decided to return to Earth. Unlike the other members of the Seven, she felt no lasting connection with the Moon, only the people. The rest of the Seven found love, but she did not. After participating in a number of interviews during the initial media blitz, Miranda secluded herself and avoided the spotlight.   She spent several years adrift and alone before falling in love. Her partner completely reversed her spirits, and eventually convinced her to reconnect with the other members of the Seven, attending several reunion events before her passing in 2167. Miranda Winters cause of death was officially listed as respiratory failure associated with "various complications of extended lunar habitation," though studies later revealed her death to be the first official case of Lunar Dust Respiratory Syndrome. All of the surviving members of the Seven and their descendants attended her funeral.
