Witches of the Bluestone
The Bluestone Witches are a secretive coven of witches in Linnunrata. Their magical methods are difficult to categorize: more arcane than typical druidic magic, but more naturally attuned than wizardry. This magic seems to be a controlled form of chaos magic with elements drawn from the Astral Plane and Ethereal Plane as well as the Material.
Structure
The coven's structure seems to be relatively egalitarian. Witches begin their formal training as pre-adolescents who are either traded by their families for a magic or taken under mysterious circumstances. (The witches seem more inclined to take children from unhappy or neglectful homes than not, and are particularly fond of taking tieflings who face fear and mistrust.)
When these young witches come of age, they adopt a surname of their choosing that reflects their magical interests. Younger, less experienced witches go by the title of Miss alongside their surname, while witches with a few decades of experience go by Mrs. (The majority of the coven are women or proxymaids, but nonbinary witches or the extremely rare male witches still use these titles.)
The matron of the coven adopts the title Granny; however, she mostly serves as a leader in terms of navigating relations with the outside world. Grannies change often, with no clear schedule or reason, and the same witch may serve as Granny several times throughout her life. The current leader of the Bluestone Witches, Granny Spiderstone, has served in the position eight separate times over the last sixty years.
Culture
Number one: Every part of existence is tangled in the same woven web. Magic is the Thread that connects one part to another; a witch's job is neither to spin nor pluck it, but merely to rearrange it.
Number two: The Thread pulls upon us with the same force that we pull upon it. Act accordingly.
Number three: There are no mistakes—only spells you didn't quite intend to cast.
Number four: Cast as it pleases you, and you alone. Let your magic serve no other master without a fair price.
Number five: Leave room for the unknown in all things. Certainty is for fools who think surprises are beneath them.
Number six: Always listen, always record, always gather, always save. You never know what might come in handy later on.
Number seven: Enjoy yourself! Whimsy is a way of magic too. The world is lighter than you think.
—Seven Principles of the Coven
Public Agenda
The Witches are incredibly secretive about their collective goals. They are willing to grant small magical favors for reasonable prices, though they often insist on payment in spell ingredients or favors rather than in coin. Some say the Witches of the Bluestone are able to perform miraculous feats of magic, but only for a nearly unbearable price, such as one's memories or firstborn child.
Various governors through Linnunrata's history have attempted to curtail the activities of the Witches of the Bluestone or eliminate them altogether. These efforts inevitably end quickly, as the governor suffers some tragedy or disappears under mysterious circumstances.
