Val-Nurem (væl ˈnuʳ ɛm)

Val-Nurem is the capital city and largest settlement of the Dreibach Empire.

Demographics

Val-Nurem is a majority-human city, though its culture, wealth, and power draw a fair amount of visitors and immigrants from other lands. In particular, it was an early center of the High Elf Diaspora in the years after the War of Great Sorrow. That influence is still seen in the newer architecture of the city, as well as in its cuisine and demographic makeup.

Defences

Val-Nurem has several concentric layers of walls around it, built periodically as the city grew over time. All bridges in or near the city are drawbridges manned by the city's whitestone golems, who also have spell-absorbing properties that shut down enemy spellcasters and prevent magical flight.

History

Modern Val-Nurem began as a fortified settlement where humans could safely gather during the reign of the Roc-Talon Horde in the later years of The Extinguishing. Its strategic position at the fork where the Lüdda River joins the Dreibach River made it more easily defensible against nomadic invading forces.

Points of interest

The oldest and most iconic building in Val-Nurem is Castle Val-Nurem, built on the banks of the Dreibach River. It used to be home to the King and used as his seat of government. It briefly served as a museum and government building before the reign of Emperor Amadeus, who resides in the castle today.   The University of Val-Nurem is an ancient and renowned university for the study of both arcane magics and holy magics, located at the heart of Val-Nurem. The main buildings on its campus are comprised of many domes and towers built from gleaming, ivory-colored marble. Alongside the castle, it is one of the few Nuremanian buildings that remained untouched in the Glorious Revolution, even among the mass destruction caused by the rebel forces.

Geography

Val-Nurem sits in a flat prairie at the confluence of Dreibach's two largest rivers, the Lüdda and the Dreibach. These rivers provide fresh water and trade routes, as well as an easier defensive position that prevents easy invasion from infantry and cavalry.
