Maid of the Mist

The Maid of the Mist is a legend popular along the Liberty Coast and in the Near Isles. It tells the story of a young woman betrothed to a sailor whose ship was wrecked the very evening it came into port by a terrible storm. The woman heard news of the storm and rushed to the harbor, devastated. Through the morning mist she could still see the mast of the ship sticking out over the harbor, and in her grief believed the ship still sailed. She swum out to join her love and was never seen again.   Sailors say that you can still see her some mornings, when the fog hangs heavy after a storm. She chases young men who look like her lost love, and—believing him to have finally returned—drags them down into the depths so that they may finally be together again.
