Irontown Rodeo
Irontown Rodeo is the largest Tygran Rodeo arena in the city of Tygrar and the oldest and most famous rodeo arena in the world. It is located in the Stallion District of Tygrar and draws huge crowds of spectators from across Dreibach.
"And the feats of daring these rodeo riders perform... my word! In just my first afternoon at the Irontown Rodeo, I saw eighteen bulls wrestled to the ground, twenty-five great-goats roped by the horns in seconds flat, thirty-two gnomish zebra riders (a fact that did not please the corresponding zebras), and certainly a generous handful of broken bones along the way. And for the finale, a horseman and a bankhur rider roped and tied down a stampeding mastodon. Yes—a fully-grown, positively-peeved mastodon! It's all thrillingly fun to watch with a heavy pint of ale in hand, but I doubt I'd have such a jolly time facing these challenges myself. In fact, should you ever see your humble scribe in the wild facing anything remotely resembling the rodeo events of Irontown, I implore you to send one or more of the handsome horsemen of Tygrar to my aid."
—Merriweather Jaunt, "The Homesick Halfling's Guide to Tygrar"
Purpose / Function
The Irontown Rodeo exists primarily to host the sport of Tygran rodeo, a broad and varied category of athletic events that involve racing, riding, subduing, or killing different types of large, dangerous livestock and wild animals. These skills evolved from those needed by the ranchers west of Tygrar and the patrols and riders of the Torch of Tygrar into thrilling and widely-beloved spectator sports in their own right. Various rodeo events are held at the Irontown Rodeo several times a week between mid-April and late November.
The rodeo season culminates with the prestigious Mayors' Crown Tournament, which begins under the Beast Moon and continues for the next nine days. In order to particiapte in the Mayor's Crown Tournament, contestants must meet qualifying scores in at least four different events at Tygran rodeos that year. These qualifiers earn points across a wide spectrum of events during the tournament, and the six highest-scoring competitors compete on the final day in a hybrid event whose exact nature changes by the year (and is always kept secret). The winner of the final event receives a tournament crown and belt, as well as a large cash prize.
When it is not being used for sporting events, the Irontown Rodeo occasionally hosts major concerts and other events that are expected to draw a crowd. In election years, the Irontown Rodeo traditionally holds the third of five mayoral candidate debates. Candidates often cater to the idiosyncratic politics of the Stallion District in this debate; those that do not tend to face hostile reactions from the crowd.
Alterations
Finalists in the Mayor's Crown Tournament have developed a tradition of dipping a hand in boot polish and leaving a handprint somewhere on the walls of the riders' lounge, near the stables. Contestants who participate alongside a tamed mount often leave a sign of their mounts on the wall as well—either a used horseshoe from their horse or a similarly-made pawprint from their bankhur.
Architecture
The Irontown Rodeo consists of a flat dirt field roughly 150 feet by 300 feet. The longer north and south sides of the ring have large wooden grandstands for spectators. Vendors of fairground foods such as ale and kebabs host their shops beneath the opposite side of the grandstands, though most send out traveling salespeople to sell foods directly to customers in the grandstands. Stables on the western side of the arena hold riders' tamed beasts (such as horses and bankhurim, while half-sunken holding pits on the east side keep the rougher untamed creatures used in beastfighting and beastriding events. Upper levels hold the less-dangerous bulls, zebras, and great-goats, while highly reinforced lower levels are reserved for the more dangerous beasts, such as mastodons, wargs, wildebeest, and the occasional 'Ngaragola.
Tourism
Irontown Rodeo is one of the biggest draws for casual visitors to Tygrar, particularly during the summer months. Compared with similar arena sports like Scaladosian jousting tournaments or the Cape Hildegard gladiator circuit, the lightning-fast pace and rugged appeal of rodeo events make them exceptionally popular with lower-class rural demographics. People visit from across the Western Duchy and beyond, making the journey in wagon caravans and often camping on the grounds outside the rodeo.
Beyond the direct draw of the sport, Irontown Rodeo and the other rodeos of Tygrar serve as something of a tool of "soft power" for Tygrar within the geopolitical landscape. The fame of the rodeo and its riders reinforces outside perception of Tygrans as strong, tenacious, and highly capable in battle. Similarly, within the Prairie Clans, nuél-orokhim winners of the Mayor's Crown Tournament often adorn their bankhurim's saddles with their championship belts for decades after their prime. Bands of the Pack of the Black Claw (whose wargs are often hustled and used in particularly dangerous rodeo events) are far less likely to attack patrols from the Torch that they know are led by highly skilled rodeo riders. The shows at Irontown Rodeo also act as an advertisement of sorts for many key Tygran exports, particularly the sun stallions favored by most local human and elven riders.
