Coffee is a brewed drink prepared with hot water and coffee beans (the seeds of berries from varietals of the
Coffea plant). The seed is separated from the rest of the fruit, roasted, ground, and filtered through hot water. It is considered a delicacy in most places, highly prized for both its flavor and its energizing properties.
History
Coffee, like so many other discoveries, was first documented by early
Sun Elf explorers of the late
Age of Audacity. At the time, it was a wild plant growing in the jungles of
Sona. These sun elf explorers experimented with brewing techniques and eventually refined the standard brewing methods known today.
Gnomish Coffee
The coffee of the sun elves was regarded mostly as a curiosity by other peoples until the gnomish coffee craze of the early Age of Complexity took off. Gnomish coffee, also known as
gnespresso, is prepared in smaller quantities, but brewed several times stronger than standard coffee recipes. Some prefer to mix gnespresso with water to weaken it slightly; this preparation is called a
tallfolk, an initially derisive name based on the fact that humans and elves (in Gnomish, "tjállfölch")
Gnomish coffee technology went through several centuries of complex (and often lethal) innovations before modern gnespresso machines were perfected in the early 1070s. The technology spread rapidly through the continent due to its efficient and excellent-tasting coffee beverages; today, every reasonably-sized town has at least one café that can prepare coffee in both the traditional and the Gnomish fashion.
