It was one small step again and again to reach Mars and the Asteroids
It was one small step from there to discover FTL
From there it was just one small step to land a human on an extraterrestrial biosphere
just one small step to our brighter destiny

How is it we walk both paths?
Earth is locked in an authoritarian regime and frequent outbreaks of a new disease that scientists don't understand make the earth a rough place to live. There are several colonies amongst the stars but the increasingly authoritarian government is marginalizing them, making them seem both undesirable or only for criminals to escape to. Yet people crave a new life there, regardless of the hardships.
