The Maniac

Zyzzenxkys was a beholder and a Marked of Yog. They were a player character in All Hail Yog, portrayed by Kate Enge.

“There is no other creature like it across all Ondûn. A floating, monstrous head, it hovers towards you on an erratic course, as though uncertain whether you’re friend or foe. Its ridged alien skull sprouts a host of ten eyestalks, each one swiveling and scanning about in search of new threats. From each eyestalk dangles random jewelry – adornments and rings and amulets that seem odd and incongruous on such an aberrant being. A mouth full of gnashing teeth and a forked, lashing tongue complete the ensemble. Its central eye – gargantuan and slitted like a serpent’s – fixes on you, twitching spasmodically with a lunatic’s glimmer.”

History

A beholder is a singular creature on Ondûn – there is only ever one beholder at a time. How this beholder, the one calling itself Zyzzenxkys, came into reality no doubt mirrors the birth of every beholder throughout history. They were conjured in the paranoid imagining of the previous beholder, imagining a monster even they could not defeat, until – created from sheer madness and terror – Zyzzenxkys was born, destroyed its creature and became The Beholder.
How Yog came to conscript this creature also remains a mystery but the aberration’s natural narcissism and predilection for interrogating their enemies made them an ideal candidate to oversee the Houses of Torment. While technically a Marked of Yog, Zyzzenxkys proved such a poor collaborator with other villains that they are very rarely called into active duty, preferring to obsess over themselves and their several hundred impossible schemes within the safety of their lair.

Character

Personality

Zyzzenxkys is a megalomaniac. Like all beholders, they are a creature of pure vanity, paranoia and lunacy. All creatures – save perhaps Yog – are beneath the beholder and must therefore be jealously plotting to usurp Zyzzenxkys from their throne. They are constantly suspicious of everyone they meet, convinced they are part of some grand conspiracy against them. Incapable of empathy or even true rational thought, Zyzzenxkys cares only for themselves and their own vanity.

Abilities

As a beholder, Zyzzenxkys is a force to reckon with. Each of their ten eyestalks can fire a distinct ray of magical energy – charm, fear, fire, paralysis, enervation, telekinesis, sleep, petrification, disintegration and even death. However, these rays fire randomly, the beholder hardly aware of which eyestalk it’s firing with. The beholder’s greatest weapon, however, is its central eye, that creates an antimagic cone wherever Zyzzenxkys looks.
Worst comes to worst, Zyzz can also bite their enemies with their razor-sharp teeth.

Campaigns

All Hail Yog 

• The Heroes: At Neogi’s suggestion, the villains traveled to the Houses of Torment's in search of the missing Vessel. There, they met Zyzzenxkys and, though the beholder was loathe to grant their request, they took the Marked deep into the facility. to meet the original Vessel. Zyzz made several smaller appearances during the party’s stay at the Houses, relaying messages or panicking idly that Yog was somehow displeased with them.
