Smuj

The Daughter

Smuj was a sentient ooze and a Marked of Yog. She was a player character in All Hail Yog, portrayed by Aliza Pearl.
“The woman before you literally melts. Now, where once she stood is only a bubbling heap of noxious goop, as colorful as an oil-slick and twice as thick. To your shock and alarm, the slime is somehow animate, worming around your feet with an alien and lascivious intelligence. The smell is utterly vile and the liquid so caustic, it begins to chew away at your clothing. You cough and stagger, your lungs burning from the fumes, but that’s when you hear the voice. As smooth and silky as the substance is odious, it purrs at you in a soothing contaltro, exhorting you to relax and make yourself comfortable. To your utter bafflement, this toxic sludge has the voice of a sultry nightclub singer.”

History

Smuj was born quite accidentally. When enemies of Yog sought a means to close a Fissure that had opened in a nearby bog, a sliver of Yog’s essence was severed, cut from the greater consciousness, and retreated into the slime at the bottom of the swamp. There, for long centuries it dwelt, slowly developing its own personality – a female personality – until it finally managed to make contact with its parent of sorts. Seeing the potential in this new, unexpected asset, Yog recruited the creature, known as Smuj, into its Marked of Yog.   Not a true servant, in the strictest sense, Smuj is a sliver of Yog’s true power. She seeks no wealth nor fame nor security in Yog’s embrace. Instead, all she desires is reincorporation. Someday, as payment for her labors, Yog has promised to absorb her again and make her one with that everlasting ephemeral evil.

Character

Personality

Despite her poisonous appearance, Smuj is quite a charming creature. Lascivious and seductive, Smuj is smooth as silk when taking the measure of anyone she deems potential prey – which is nearly everyone. As a fragment of Yog, she carries all her progenitor’s endless desire to destroy and consume, tempered by her own wly personality, stewed for centuries at the bottom of a bog. A voracious omnivore, she will eat anything and anyone. As a result, she’s surprisingly worldly, having devoured people on all six continents and living vicariously through them.   All Smuj desires, more than anything, is to reincorporate with Yog, whom she views as her parent. Traveling by Fissure is particularly cruel for her, a brief glimpse at what her blessed reward will be, once all her labors are complete.

Abilities

Smuj is perhaps the most versatile of all Yog’s chosen champions. An amorphous blob of caustic ooze, Smuj is preternaturally stealthy. In her liquid shape, she is capable of climbing walls and slithering through cracks. Her innate eldritch nature allows her to cast a small number of spells, each more noxious and virulent than the last. She cannot truly be destroyed, so long as one droplet goes unexpunged, but, in order to heal, she must drain the surrounding earth of all its life and vitality. With neither eyes nor mouth, she can neither see nor speak but can sense vibrations in the air and communicate telepathically with anyone who breathes her fumes. In combat, her pseudopods wrap around her prey and engulfs them whole, dissolving away to nothing inside her corrosive form.   Her greatest talent, however, is her ability to transform into an exact duplicate of any creature she’s consumed. This near-perfect disguise confers onto Smuj the victim’s knowledge and skills but dissolves away to nothing but slime after an hour.

Campaigns

All Hail Yog

  • The Ritual: In 898 4A, Smuj was among the four villains tasked with brokering an alliance with Hadar. Fresh from devouring a dockside sailor, Smuj took an especial interest in her new companions, particularly Ernst, whom she found she could neither poison nor devour. In the presence of the Vessel of Yog, Smuj became immediately obeisant, pleading her progenitor for a reunion long denied. While researching in the Houses of Enigma, Smuj assumed the guise of a librarian she’d once consumed and read everything she could on Mount Masarthaga. During the ambush of Witherby, Smuj – somewhat unnecessarily – disguised herself as a wight, only to devour the bureaucrat, assume his identity and sign away all manner of property to Ernst. During the unicorn hunt, Smuj stealthily spread grease across the grove’s floor and stopped the unicorn’s running with a stinking cloud. It was Smuj, in the guise of a mahout, who tamed the mammoth and, during the ritual atop Mount Masarthaga, it was Smuj who agreed to speak terms with Hadar, once the Hungerer arrived. When Hadar made its grand entrance, Smuj attempted to speak with the elder evil but could not establish a firm connection, the Hungerer repelled by her toxicity. When she finally managed to get its attention and made mention of Yog, Hadar was further disgusted, regarding Yog as a weakling. This angered Smuj even more and she lobbed a vitriolic sphere into Hadar’s yawning mouth, demanding its surrender. It did relent to a parlay, Smuj transforming into a petulant child for the negotiation portion. This petulance followed her during the entire scene, the most volatile member of the parlay.
