The Canny Kaani Organization in On the Road Again | World Anvil

The Canny Kaani

The lawless city of Kookakaani could only have been put together by the Canny Kaani, so the tales go. They thrived on chaos, yet somehow managed to keep a semblance of society around them. This was not an organization of the strong, but of the cunning. It was said that their leader could have talked Faumob into releasing the ctod, if only she had been born earlier.

Structure

  • Kaimi. She never hid her position at the top and required no ranking title to hide who she was. Therefore, after her death, her successor used her name as the title.
  • The Faceless. Those directly under the Kaimi. It was unknown when one was promoted to this rank from Candidate, as the Faceless were Kaimi's hidden eyes within her own guild. All knew this role existed, but never who filled it.
  • The Candidates. This is as high as most good thieves could hope to become, unless they could find a way to prove themselves further to Kaimi that they were loyal to none other than her - not even the guild. The Candidates were the masters of the individual halls and, even more importantly, making sure the allotted tributes made their way to the Kaimi.
  • The Tongues. Those put in charge of Shadows and Hands, their specialties were attached to their name: talking their way in and out of any situation.
  • The Shadows. At the point where a thief could be expected to enter a house without notice, or spy on a target for weeks on end with them none the wiser, they would be considered a Shadow.
  • The Hands. When officially brought into the Canny Kaani, the Hands would do all of the grunt work. Simple pickpocketing, distraction, the works.
  • The Fresh. Technically, the Fresh were not a part of the guild. They might not even have known about it. But the Canny knew about them. They watched over the Fresh until a true member decided to invite them.

Culture

The Canny were thought to be the downtrodden, taking their place among the powerful by tricking the powerful into thinking they belonged there. Protective of their own, but needing to be selfish, the Canny Kaani was filled with hypocrites. They had to be loyal to the guild to advance, but to reach the very top they had to be loyal to Kaimi - even when she gave orders that appeared to undermine her guild.

Public Agenda

The Canny Kaani did not take from the rich to give to the poor, they simply never took from the poor because that was not where the power was. While money was indeed stolen, it was less important then information and positions that they could obtain outside the guild and what could be done with those.

Disbandment

No one is sure what happened to the Canny. While Kookakaani remains rather lawless, after the second Kaimi's failure at keeping the guild together it is thought that each hall became their own organizations, which crumbled even further when not supported in the way Kaimi was able to support each hall. There are those who still believe the Canny are out there, simply not as public as they were with Kaimi in charge and therefore a much smaller but more tightly knit organization.
