The Maelstrom College of Magic
On top of floating landmasses above the Maelstrom is the Maelstrom College of Magic. A special college for only mages at the top of their class. The purpose of the college amongst other things is to study the properties of the Maelstrom. It is extremely exclusive even to its members. Most knowledge the college holds is kept secret by the Grand Mage. Despite its difficult to reach location, the college can obtain any items a student or teacher desires for experimentation as well as any necessities, such as food and drink. They do this through advanced teleportation magic, they use this same tactic to bring in their members.
Demographics
While the college supposedly only picks their students based on proficiency, there seems to be a notable amount of Elves and Humans.
Government
The law of the college is simple: Do not interfere with the projects of the upper-tier mages. If you ask questions to make sure they're the right ones. Under few circumstances should one disturb the Grand Mage. The Grand Mage has the last say.
Defences
The image is surrounded by an invisible force shield. This shield only allows entry to those permitted by the Grand Master. Most mages are equipped with defense magic, however, should this fail them the college is equipped with large magical artillery each loaded with a choice spell.
Industry & Trade
The College is sustained mostly through its connections with the world's leading factions. The college receives "donations" through these factions and in return they supply these cities with their top tier mages. The higher the "donation" the better the mage.
Guilds and Factions
The college breaks itself up mostly by the school of magic one studies. While these factions will overlap for group projects most tend to keep to themselves and each has a small sense of superiority over the others.
History
The college was founded in the year [insert number] by the current Grand Master Evergreen: A tiefling with a knack for the arcane. Though few people know his true motives rumor has it he started the college in memory of a loved one. The islands took flight a year after the college's construction, though how is a mystery. The college has kept a steady income of members, artifacts, and "donations" ever since.
Architecture
The college is buildings are made up mostly of redwood logs and large cobblestone spires. One building, in particular, The Aviary, is a large glass dome.
Geography
The buildings are situated atop large floating landmasses inhabited by weeping willow trees. Along the sides are waterfalls running down the island from a seemingly endless water source. Long deep green vines run its way down the cliffsides and dangle below, clinging to the rocky underbelly.
