Hollow Stone Settlement in Omari | World Anvil

Hollow Stone

The day the wind leaves us will mark our fall.
This small village is located on the Eastern side of Ukrix, Omari's hottest and arid island. It's a midway point between the Glistening Expanse and the Raglet Slopes. Hollow Stone is one of the older settlements in the area.

Architecture

The oldest buildings were crafted from bricks made using mud and clay. These materials were gathered from the soil on the side closer to the mountain range. Each home houses several generations with room for a large kitchen. They are spacious with built in vents to allow air circulation and help keep the interior cool.   Over time they built new homes using wood and stone gathered from trade and expeditions into the mountains. As the technology developed, they built solar panels atop the buildings.   The village is a mix of grays and tans with simple development and art designs. Common motifs are images of the wind and mystical birds. Most buildings are rectangular and shape with a maximum of two floors. Many have basements that connect with each other.

Layout

Hollow Stone has a circular shape with its oldest buildings at the center. They get more modern the farther away from the middle they are. Most buildings are residential. There is a small general store with a mix of local and imported goods. Located on the Southern outskirts is a larger trade post that handles both mail and outside trade.   The center of the village is a communal gathering spot for locals to trade, gossip, eat, and pass the time in general. There are a few shrines here as well. Holidays and other religious ceremonies often happen in this location.   Within the space between the village and the mountains, several locals established farmland. Occasionally traveler's and vagrants will set up camp nearby.

Products

Supplies are sparse in the region, but what the residents are able to produce, they produce it well. Most farmers raise sturdy cattle and goats. These provide them with most of their meats and dairy. Some are able to grow native crops that can survive the dry climate. Other forms of local food come from insects and occasionally hunting nearby wildlife.   Many locals are artisans and enjoy selling / trading their crafts to travelers and tourists. There are usually merchants willing to travel to other areas to bring their goods elsewhere for a small percent of the sale. Goods range from pottery, blown glass, textiles, and even protection charms. Some trinkets are deliberate tourist grabs.

Wind Stones

An important feature of the village is the circle of evenly spaced standing stones that encircle the area. They are tall, light blue, and have symbols carved along their lengths. Each stone is unique. Every pillar also has a hollowed out section in differing areas. Some are small holes while others are much wider.   There is a lot of wind in the region. When air blows through these holes, it produces melodic sounds. Each stone creates different music. Locals have a strong belief that this effect protects the village and brings good luck. Vandalizing them is a crime worthy of banishment. If other forms of damage occur, it's seen as a bad omen.

This village seems pretty peaceful and hardworking. My favourite is the Wind Stones. ^^

Thank you! Omari's settlements are already all named, even if I haven't developed them yet. So I was thinking what would lend the village such a name and those stones came to mind as a neat idea.
