Delignification (/diːˈliɡnə,fīˈkāSH(ə)n/)

Airmid wiped the sweat from her brow as she carefully scraped the white ash from the fire. A stoppered flash sits precariously atop the cherry embers of the carefully constructed ashwood fire.

"40 hours down, 8 to go" she whispered.

The tawny figure of a determined, axe-wielding Halfling glows dimly in the workshop. The sound of snoring fills the hut - their source apparently the miniscule man curled in flea-ridden rags at the feet of the imposing woman.

Treatment Program

The topical agent developed by Airmid is a penetrating oil that is applied to lignified flesh once per week for no less than four weeks. The oil works on a microscopic level to slowly rejuvenate the lignified cells into their normal behaviour. Treated areas must be protected from exposure to water as it displaces the oil beneath the surface.

Once treatment has started, the oil must be re-applied within the number of days as weeks of treatment previously received. Failing to respect this timeline causes the treatment to fail and the lignification effect is permanent.

Agent Manufacturing

The base of the delignification treatment oil is derived from flaxseed (or more specifically, flax oil) that is manually pressed then painstakingly refined by concentrating the oil extraction using ethanol and a Soxhlet extractor (yield ~40% by weight ). A portion of the extracted flaxseed oil must be continously heated in a container buried in a smoldering wood fire (~300°C = 572°F) for two days to form a viscous, yellow substance and then mixed with harvested litharge (Lead Oxide) and distilled hydrocarbon (mineral spirits). The final product must be stored in sealed container placed within a dark location.

Author's Notes

The topical agent is based upon danish oil, a common wood treatment product. Homemade Danish Oil can be made with equal parts of boiled linseed oil , polyurethane varnish, and mineral spirits.
The treatment price and duration are based upon the cost and creation time for a 5th level spell scroll for Greater Restoration per Wizard's of the Coast "Xanathar's Guide to Everything" (pg. 133)
