The Skysworn

The Skysworn is a prestigious and noble knightly order renowned for its valiant and highly skilled members. What sets them apart from other knightly orders is their unique partnership with dragons, a bond that serves as a mark of their guild and station. The Skysworn knights are not only expert warriors but also seasoned dragon riders, forging an unbreakable bond with their majestic and awe-inspiring companions.   United by their unwavering commitment to honor, justice, and the protection of the realm, the Skysworn dedicate their lives to defending the innocent, upholding the law, and preserving the peace. With their dragons by their side, they possess a remarkable advantage in battles, swiftly navigating the skies and striking fear into the hearts of their enemies.   Rigorous training and unwavering discipline shape the members of the Skysworn into exceptional fighters and skilled dragon riders. The bond between knight and dragon is a testament to trust, loyalty, and mutual respect, forming a partnership that exemplifies the harmony between humanity and these majestic creatures.   As champions of the realm, the Skysworn are often called upon to face grave threats and challenges. Their bravery and chivalry are well-known, and they stand as symbols of hope and protection for the people they serve. Through their dragon companions, the Skysworn possess an exceptional advantage in reconnaissance, communication, and mobility, making them an invaluable asset in times of war and crisis.

Tour of Duty

A dragon flight tour of duty is a period during which a dragon rider and their dragon take on the responsibility of guarding one of the remote Dragon Roosts located far from the main guild headquarters. These Dragon Roosts are strategically positioned to protect and monitor the vast and distant territories, guarding against potential threats to the cities and settlements under the Skysworn's protection.   Upon receiving their assignment, the dragon rider and their dragon travel to the designated Dragon Roost. The journey is often an adventurous and challenging one as they traverse untamed landscapes, soaring over mountain ranges, crossing expansive forests, and navigating treacherous waters. It is an opportunity for both the rider and their dragon to bond further as they face various trials and experiences together.   Once they reach the remote Dragon Roost, they settle into their new post and establish a routine of vigilant watchfulness. The Dragon Roost is a base of operations, providing shelter, sustenance, and essential resources for the dragon and its rider during their tour of duty. The surroundings are wild and untamed, and the dragon flight must always be prepared to face potential threats, such as rogue creatures, hostile invaders, or even other dragons from opposing territories.   During their tour of duty, the dragon rider and their companion diligently patrol the skies and surrounding regions, keeping a watchful eye for any signs of trouble or danger. They communicate with other Dragon Roosts and the main guild headquarters to share information and coordinate their efforts in guarding against potential threats.   While stationed at the remote Dragon Roost, the dragon rider also takes the time to deepen their knowledge of the territory and its inhabitants. They learn the behavior and migratory patterns of local creatures, helping them distinguish friend from foe. They may also befriend and form alliances with nearby settlements, earning the trust and gratitude of the people they protect.   Throughout their tour of duty, the dragon rider and their companion continue to hone their combat skills, always staying prepared for any possible confrontations. The bond between the rider and dragon grows stronger as they face challenges together, and the experience broadens their perspectives and understanding of the world around them.   Once their tour of duty comes to an end, the dragon rider and their dragon return to the main guild headquarters, where they share their experiences and knowledge with other members of the Skysworn. The tour of duty serves as a valuable opportunity for growth, fostering resilience, resourcefulness, and unwavering dedication to the Skysworn's mission of safeguarding the realms from threats.   These tours typically last six months, though some dragon riders opt to do multiple tours in a row.

Dragon Flight Squad

A dragon flight squadron is a highly organized and skilled group of dragon riders who work together as a cohesive unit to accomplish various tasks and missions. Each squadron is led by a seasoned Dragon Rider, often a Scaled Master or an experienced Dragon Rider of high rank. The squadron is usually composed of a diverse group of Dragon Riders with different skills and abilities, as well as their loyal dragon companions.   Members of a dragon flight squadron undergo rigorous training to synchronize their actions with their dragons, ensuring seamless and effective teamwork. They practice complex flight formations, combat maneuvers, and communication techniques to enhance their coordination and combat capabilities. These skilled riders and their dragons forge deep bonds of trust, understanding, and respect, which are essential for the success of their missions.   Dragon flight squadrons are tasked with various duties, such as defending their territory from external threats, patrolling borders, responding to emergencies, and assisting other guilds or settlements in times of need. They may also engage in reconnaissance missions, intelligence gathering, or support larger military operations.   The squadrons often have distinct symbols, colors, or markings on their dragon-riding equipment, uniforms, or banners to signify their unity and identity. They take pride in their squadron's history, accomplishments, and reputation, as well as the legacy of the dragons that came before them.   In times of crisis or when facing formidable adversaries, multiple dragon flight squadrons may join forces, creating a formidable force capable of handling even the most challenging situations. The cooperation and camaraderie among the squadrons strengthen their effectiveness and ensure they can tackle any threat as a united front.

Death Among the Skysworn

The death of a dragon is a deeply mourned event within the Skysworn, and it leaves a profound impact on both the rider and the guild as a whole. If a dragon dies while its rider survives, it creates a loss that can never truly be filled. Many riders struggle to cope with the grief and often do not survive long after the death of their beloved companion.   On the rare occasion when a rider dies while their dragon survives, it is an equally tragic event. The surviving dragon will let out a cry of anguished loss, reflecting the deep bond they shared with their rider. In the aftermath of the rider's death, the dragon will disappear, vanishing into another realm, carrying the body of their fallen companion with them.   The fate of the dragon after they disappear remains a matter of speculation and mystery within the guild. Some believe that the dragon may die shortly after, unable to bear the loss of their rider. Others speculate that the dragon may cross into an afterlife or another dimension where they are reunited with their rider, finding solace in their eternal bond.   Regardless of the dragon's fate, the loss of a rider and their dragon leaves a lasting impact on the Skysworn and serves as a somber reminder of the risks and sacrifices involved in their noble quest to protect and serve.

Structure

The guild follows a structured and hierarchical organization, with different ranks and roles defining the members' positions and responsibilities:
  • Wyrmling: Aspiring dragon riders start as Wyrmlings. They undergo rigorous training in dragon care, feeding, biology, and combat. Physical fitness and unwavering determination are required to succeed in this stage.
  • Dragon Squire: Upon completion of their initial training, Wyrmlings are selected by Dragon Riders to become their Squires. They assist with equipment care and eventually earn the privilege of helping care for their mentor's dragon. Rarely, a Squire may be chosen by a Scaled Master or the Grandmaster, a great honor. Combat training continues during this stage.
  • Dragon Rider: When a dragon chooses its Rider from among the Squires, the individual is promoted to the rank of Dragon Rider. Dragon Riders make up the majority of the guild and form strong bonds with their dragon companions.
  • Scaled Master: The most skilled riders of each dragon color are nominated to become Scaled Masters. Each color has its own Scaled Master if there are dragons of that color within the guild. They are respected leaders and mentors to other Riders.
  • Grandmaster: The strongest and most accomplished Scaled Master is appointed as the Grandmaster. This position is voted on by the Scaled Masters and carries the responsibility of overseeing the guild's health and welfare.
  • Scaled Elders: Retired Riders and Dragons with valuable experience and wisdom become Scaled Elders. They have flexible duties in the guild and are highly esteemed for their rare insights and teachings.
  • Groundlain: This unfortunate title is given to Riders who have lost their dragons. They are cared for by the guild for the rest of their lives, usually not long after the loss. Despite their grief, some Groundlain volunteer for dangerous missions as they have nothing left to lose.
  • Tranquil Scales: Although not Dragon Riders themselves, the Tranquil Scales hold immense importance in the guild. They are the healers responsible for the well-being and longevity of both dragons and their riders, playing a crucial role in maintaining the guild's strength and resilience.

Who can Join

The Skysworn is open to individuals who are touched by Life and possess the necessary qualities to become Dragon riders. Humans, Mages, Changelings, and werewolves are all eligible to join the ranks of the guild and form a bond with a dragon companion.   However, those who are touched by death, such as Vampires, are rejected by the dragons and are not able to become Dragon riders. The dragons' keen instincts and connection to Life guide their choices, and they choose their riders based on their affinity with the energies of Life and the potential for a strong and harmonious partnership.

Culture

The culture of the Skysworn, the knightly order of dragon riders, revolves around a deep respect for dragons, a strong sense of duty, and a commitment to service and protection. The close bond between a dragon and its Rider is mirrored in the strong connections between members of the guild. They support each other in both times of triumph and adversity, fostering a sense of unity and family.

As noble dragon riders, their primary goal is to defend the realm from external threats, be it marauding monsters, invading forces, or any other peril that endangers the safety and peace of the land. They are often seen as the guardians of the people, and their presence brings reassurance and a sense of security to the communities they serve. The Skysworn are renowned for their bravery and fearlessness in facing danger, and they are always at the forefront of battles and missions to ensure the realm's safety.   Additionally, the Skysworn actively involve themselves in aiding those in need. They often undertake humanitarian missions, assisting in disaster relief efforts, providing medical aid, and supporting the less fortunate. They believe in using their skills and abilities to bring about positive change and help create a better world for all.   Beyond their martial duties, the Skysworn also prioritize fostering peace and diplomacy. They act as intermediaries in conflicts, striving to resolve disputes through peaceful means whenever possible. Their role as ambassadors between different realms and factions helps build bridges and forge alliances for the greater good.   Education and knowledge sharing are also part of their public agenda. The Skysworn promote the study of dragon lore, dragon biology, and other areas of expertise related to their unique partnership with dragons. They often conduct workshops, seminars, and public exhibitions to increase awareness and understanding of these magnificent creatures.   Through their public appearances and engagement with the realm's inhabitants, the Skysworn aims to be an inspiring and positive presence. They hold themselves to the highest standards of chivalry, integrity, and honor, setting an example for others to follow. The respect and admiration they receive from the people they protect further solidify their role as esteemed heroes in the eyes of the public.

Assets

The Skysworn possess a formidable array of assets that contribute to their strength and effectiveness as a knightly order. Foremost among these assets are their powerful dragon companions, each one a magnificent creature with unique abilities and strengths. These dragons form a deep bond with their riders, creating a symbiotic relationship that enhances the skills and capabilities of both parties. The dragons' keen senses, aerial mobility, and combat prowess make them invaluable allies in defending the realm and carrying out missions.   Furthermore, the extensive knowledge and expertise of the Skysworn members are essential assets. They undergo rigorous training in various disciplines, including combat, dragon care, diplomacy, and strategic planning. The Skysworn maintain extensive libraries and archives, filled with ancient tomes, scrolls, and historical records, contributing to a vast repository of knowledge on dragons, creatures, and the realms they serve.   The guild's vast network of connections and alliances is another significant asset. Through their diplomacy and heroic deeds, the Skysworn have forged relationships with different kingdoms, factions, and communities. This network enables them to gather vital information, mobilize resources swiftly, and seek assistance when confronting challenges that require collective effort.   Additionally, the Skysworn's infrastructure and headquarters serve as critical assets in their operations. Their bases of operation are strategically located, providing easy access to different regions of the realm. These strongholds are equipped with training grounds, medical facilities, workshops for crafting equipment, and living quarters for members and their dragons.   The public's trust and admiration are intangible yet essential assets. The Skysworn's reputation as noble protectors and champions of the people grants them the cooperation and support of the populace. Citizens are more inclined to seek their aid and assistance, enabling the Skysworn to swiftly respond to threats and emergencies.   Lastly, the dedication, camaraderie, and unity within the Skysworn itself are perhaps their most valuable asset. The strong bonds among its members create a cohesive and formidable force that stands unwavering in the face of adversity. Through their shared values, mutual respect, and unwavering commitment to their mission, the Skysworn form a united front against any challenge that threatens the realm and its inhabitants. This sense of unity and purpose is a driving force that propels them to face danger head-on, ensuring that they remain an unyielding bastion of protection and hope for the world they serve.

Finances

The Skysworn primarily sustains itself financially through a combination of different sources. The main source of income comes from the financial support provided by the cities and settlements they protect. These regions recognize the invaluable protection and security that the Skysworn offers, and they contribute funds and resources to maintain the guild's operations. Additionally, the Skysworn receives financial aid through donations and sponsorship from wealthy patrons who believe in their mission and wish to support their cause. These patrons may be individuals or influential organizations that see the value of having a strong and skilled dragon flight squadron protecting the realms.   During their dragon flight tours of duty, the Skysworn riders sometimes come across valuable artifacts or rare resources. When deemed appropriate and necessary, the guild may sell these items to acquire additional funds to support their operations and provide for their members.   The Skysworn leadership and administrators also carefully manage the guild's resources, making wise investments and financial decisions to ensure the stability and sustainability of the organization. They prioritize the needs of the riders, ensuring that they are adequately compensated for their service and dedication.   Overall, the Skysworn maintains a careful balance between financial responsibility and their duty to protect the realms. Their financial support enables them to continue training new dragon riders, providing for the well-being of their dragons, and maintaining the necessary infrastructure to fulfill their mission of safeguarding the lands from threats and preserving peace and harmony.

History

In the year 57AF, the remarkable human named Lyanna Stormwind forever altered the course of history by forming a bond with and riding a dragon, an unprecedented feat that shattered the belief that dragons were mindless beasts. Lyanna's unique bond with the dragon opened the path for a new era of understanding and cooperation between humans and these magnificent creatures. Through her teachings and courage, Lyanna inspired others, and in 65AF, a small group of dragon riders formed the foundation of what would later evolve into the esteemed knightly order known as the Skysworn.   As the news of the first Dragon Rider spread, more people began to seek out these mythical connections, leading to the gradual formation of the Skysworn guild. With a strong focus on training, camaraderie, and protection, the Skysworn embraced the principles of honor, duty, and compassion, aiming to foster a strong alliance between dragon riders and the dragons they bonded with.   Throughout the years, the Skysworn grew in size and influence, expanding its ranks to include Dragon Squires, Dragon Riders, Scaled Masters, and the esteemed Grandmaster. The guild played a pivotal role in maintaining peace and defending the realm from external threats while nurturing the close bond between dragons and their riders. The Skysworn's history is now interwoven with legends of bravery, wisdom, and the unbreakable bond between humans and dragons as they continue to carry forth their legacy of protecting the world they hold dear.
