Goblin Market Organization in Odyssey Earth | World Anvil

Goblin Market

After the war, the long abandoned tunnels of those that survived were slowly populated with the denizens of the deep earth. None of these species were as prolific or as organized as the Goblins. Finding an unused, accessible space, the Goblin hordes soon piled in en masse, forming a merchant society unlike those top-side. The Goblin Market of the Underdark is a winding expanse amidst the tunnels and hidden alcoves beneath the earth. The walls are lined with bioluminescent lichen and other flora; some dangerous, some not. Anyone passing into the depths needs either a map or a guide or risk losing themselves in the perpetual darkness or worse. The Underdark is not without it's predators too.

Goblin Society and the Fine Art of Haggling

Goblins are known to enjoy trading, bartering and haggling for their livelihoods and while this is not true for all goblins, there is a reason for the stereotype. Give any Goblin a coin and they will likely turn that from a small investment into a decent stockpile of resources - be it in coin or in another form. Goblins are also known to be able to find rare items, scrolls, spells or even Contracts for the occasional Lost that comes calling to the markets below through their vast network of associates and connections.   Amongst the Goblin's of the Underdark, there are a few key positions that are held, and sometimes fought over, within the various camps - Pit Boss, Floorman, Croupier and the lowest, but hardly without prestige, position... Dealer. Each camp has at least one or many goblins within their family group filling these rolls.

Dealer

The dealer is the most prolific of the rolls and as may be expected by the title the goblins at this rank, they are responsible for the day to day interactions between other venders, the buyers, and the other bosses within the merchants camp. Dealers are typically quite skilled in haggling and are known to be somewhat offended if buyers don't play along with it. This may result in future dealings with the Goblins being terse, cut short or even having requests ignored without significant amounts of money on the table first. Money will always turn heads.

Floorman

The Floorman is responsible for calling the opening and closing of the market... at least on the surface. He is also responsible for settling disputes on the floor, is in charge of the bouncers and brutes, and ensures that everything is as amicable for all parties as possible... for Goblin and other species alike. The Floorman is also who one might seek out if they needed a guide around the market, or were looking for specific information. They are the eyes and ears on the floor. They report directly to the Pit Boss.

Pit Boss

There is only one to two Pit Bosses at any given time out on the floor, working in shifts. The Pit Boss is the final say in disputes, arguments or debates in the Market - between Goblins and other species, or between different Goblin Camps. The Pit Boss has the duty of also being the final say in people being evicted from the Market. While getting bounced by the floorman may only last a day or two, being ousted by the Pit Boss will likely last a good deal longer.
